We have found two very excellent professors, whose works, with other rather more modern and equally scarce pamphlets, we have laid under contribution in the following pages. We have devoted some years to the study of the subject and reading the palm as we do we find much to recommend the art. There is considerable instruction to be gained by its practice, but we would recommend caution in fully interpreting the lines of the hand in public. There may well be occasions when silence even will best meet the case for putting aside the objection sensitive people may entertain on the subject, nervous individuals and those whose minds are apt to dwell upon trifles as likely to affect their future happiness should not be " operated on." About the Author:- Edward Heron-Allen (1861 1943) was an English polymath, writer, scientist and Persian scholar who translated the works of Omar Khayyam. Heron-Allen was born in London, the youngest of four children of George Allen and Catherine Herring. He was educated at Elstree and Harrow School from 1876, where he developed an interest in classics, science and music (particularly in violin playing), however he did not attend university. In 1879 he joined the family firm of Allen and Son, solicitors, in Soho, London. He subsequently produced a book on violin making that was still in print over a hundred years later. Heron-Allen wrote on archaeology, Buddhist philosophy, the cultivation, gourmet appreciation of and culture of the asparagus, as well as a number of novels and short stories of science fiction and horror written under his pseudonym of "Christopher Blayre. Henry Frith (2 May 1840 12 October 1917) was an Irish engineer who translated the works of Jules Verne and others, as well as writing his own works. His prolific output amounted to nearly 200 works between translations, novels, and instructional titles. Frith was born in Dublin, Ireland, on 2 May 1840, at 2, Upper Leeson Street. His father worked in the Ordnance Office in Dublin. Frith was educated at Cheltenham College and entered Trinity College Dublin on 1 July 1857 to train as a Civil Engineer. Applying for a Civil Service post, he was appointed to the War Office in London, where he remained until 1875 when he retired with a pension and began his literary efforts. Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 3rd Edition. A well loved and used hardback book, with red and black title impressions on both the front board and spine. No jacket. The book is in good condition, normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. The paper backed boards are a tad grubby from plenty of good use. The edge of papers have a slight tint of pink, which has faded over time, with the odd mark here and there. 444 pages, all intact, all pages, text, diagrams and fabulous illustrations are all in really good, clean readable order. (You might find the odd pencil mark on a couple of pages, nothing to drastic.) Nice tight binding. On title page is listed the published date underneath publisher's name as 1895, however it is a third edition, (which could lead the published date to be 1898) and at the end of the conclusion page is the date of 1896 in roman numerals, therefore I have listed this as the published date, so having no more to reference the actual published date, I'm happy to be corrected if anyone knows different. On inside front board is the name label of bookseller "Dymocks" Book Arcade, Sydney, which shows its a book, well travelled. The book is translated from the French of M. Le Capitaine C. S. D'arpentigny by the author Ed. Heron Allen, with original plates and explanatory diagrams by Rosamund Brunel Horsley. A truly fascinating book, with a wealth of brilliant facts and information that make this a very interesting read.…
