Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Gottschall, Hermann von: Streifzüge durch das Gebiet des Schachproblems (Forays into the Realm of Chess Problems) Berlin and Leipzig, 1926. Walter de Gruyter & Co. VIII, 246 [2] p. 1 frontispiece and 783 black-and-white illustrations (chess diagrams). First edition. In a later half-cloth binding, with the publisher's original paper front cover pasted onto the front board. A special and classic chess problem volume. Streifzüge durch das Gebiet des Schachproblems is one of Gottschall's most important theoretical and practical comprehensive works. It is a thorough theoretical treatise on the art of composing chess problems. The book is one of the fundamental works of 1920s chess literature, remaining a valuable resource for chess historians and enthusiasts of chess composition to this day. The author discusses in detail the essence of chess problems and the basic rules of composition: Presents the starting positions of the problems (Die Anfangsstellung) and the possible final mating positions (Die Schlußstellung). Dedicates a separate chapter to the economical use of pieces and moves, which is one of the most important criteria for high-quality problem composition. Examines the specific role of the white pieces, combinations, and provides an in-depth analysis of the famous "Indian Problem" (Indische Problem) and the theory of critical moves. Distinguishes between original compositions and adaptations/copies, which was already a debated issue at the time regarding plagiarism and artistic value. Hermann von Gottschall (1862 -1933) was a German chess master, problem composer, and writer who actively shaped German chess life for several decades. Although the logical and strategic principles of the "neudeutsche Schule" (New German School) increasingly dominated the field of chess problems during this era, Gottschall maintained his own independent style. In his works, he frequently combined different trends and had a predilection for composing so-called Bohemian-type mate problems, which focused on clean, economical, and aesthetic mating nets.
