Softcover. Zustand: Good. The Dead Star, Nova Broadcast 5, "Dutch Schultz Machine Gunned in Newark Bar. 3 Aides Die October 23, 1935." The edition is not stated precisely; it could be a First U.S. Edition, but this item could also have been the first such of Nova Broadcast that was published in the U.S., making this a true First Edition. The publisher, Jan Jacob Herman (b. Jan. 2, 1942), notes that is was published previously in a "slightly different format" in "my own mag" in English, giving credit to Jess Nuttall, the publisher. A perfectly serviceable reference copy; nothing fancy, but complete and sturdy, mounted in sleeved card-stock. Staple-bound purple, pink and rose, heavy card-stock wraps, a bit rubbed and with lightly rusted staples, encasing a folded, 11-page spurting of his usual wild literary forays (public readings, Puerto Rican boy-punks, drug-using kimosabes, crime-syndicate big-wigs and according shoot-outs), but rendered a bit in the manner of Hunter S. Thompson and with grainy black-and-white photographs a la maybe a Weegee. The text is dialogue-heavy and rendered Celine-like in ellipsis and not much more punctuation. No place of publication listed, but the editor, publisher, author and journalist, Herman, founded NOVA Broadcast Press as well as the journal San Francisco Earthquake (1967-1971.) Herman "published Beat, post-Beat and Fluxus writers and artists such as William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Dick Higgins, Wolf Vostell, Norman Mustill, Claude Pelieu, Mary Beach, Liam O'Gallagher and Nanos Valaoritis. He worked with Higgins at Something Else Press, becoming the editor (1972-1974). He co-wrote Cut Up or Shut Up, with Carl Weissner and Jurgen Ploog, and published other experimental fiction. He is also the author of A Talent for Trouble, the biography of the director William Wyler" (see the Northwestern University library "finding aids" page devoted to "people" and the Jan Herman Archive). Herman became a reporter and columnist at the Chicago Sun-Times, the New York Daily News and the Los Angeles Times and then even a Senior Editor at MSNBC!Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
