A charming limited edition of A Tour Thro' the Whole Island of Great Britain, Divided Into Circuits or Journies, Giving a Particular and Diverting Account of whatever is Curious and worth Observation, written by famed English author Daniel Defoe, with this edition containing an introduction by English economist and historian G.D.H. Cole. Complete in two volumes. Published in 1927, first published between 1724-1727 . This edition was limited to one thousand copies for sale. In the publisher's original white quarter cloth with marble boards. Contains all eighteen maps to Volume I, including one which is folding, and all twenty-two maps to Volume II by cartographer Herman Moll. Collated complete. Considered his most financially successful work during his lifetime, this entertaining travel account offers a brilliant portrait of eighteenth century Britain, with Defoe's strong narrative voice makes him a very believeable personal tour guide.Despite this convincing narrative, Defoe did not tour the country while writing the work, with much of his descriptions relying on his past experiences as a merchant and when working as a spin doctor for Tory minister Robert Harley. Volume I includes travels in East Anglia and Southern Counties, while Volume II takes us through Wales, Northern counties, and a brief chapter on Scotland. In the publisher's original white quarter cloth with marble boards. Externally, mostly smart, with minimal marks to marble boards. Slight fading to spines, with a couple of small marks to spine labels. Faint bumping to the heads and tails of the spines, and to the extremities.
