One page with two tiny stains but the text is otherwise fine. Inscribed to author Mary McCarthy and her husband, diplomat James West, in Paris in 1965. Herling-Grudzi?ski's famous autobiographical account of the horrors of the Soviet systempublished a decade before *A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich* inscribed to a noted American author and intellectual. Nobel laureate Czeslaw Milosz called Herling "one of the most important witnesses of the twentieth century, a heroic man and truly worthy writer," and in Herling's obituary in *The New York Times*, *A World Apart* is described as "one of the first and among the most powerful and enduring accounts of life and death in the Soviet network of prisons and labor camps. .".
