Zustand: Good. circa, [1881]., [1881]. Good. - Three autographs penned on paper mounted on both sides of stiffer 4-1/2 inch high by 4 inch wide stock clipped from an autograph album. That of Admiral Ashley Cooper Key, dated "Oct. 24, '81" is penned on a slip of paper mounted at the top of the recto. Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon has signed himself "Carnarvon" on a smaller slip of paper mounted below the admiral's signature with his crest embossed in blind mounted above. Penned on a larger piece of pink paper mounted to the verso is the autograph of Ellen Terry, signed "Ellen Terry / Liverpool - September". The edges are rough and the sheet bearing Ellen Terry's autograph is quite soiled, although all three autographs are quite bold & clear. Good. Royal Navy Admiral Sir Astley Cooper Key (1821-1888) saw action at the Battle of Vuelta de Obligado during the Anglo-French blockade of the Rio de la Plata. He took part in the Battle of Bomarsund and the Bombardment of Sveaborg during the Crimean War. He fought in the Battle of Canton during the second Opium War and commanded the Baltic Fleet which kept Russia from entering Constantinople during the Russo-Turkish War. As First Naval Lord he sanctioned the building of six Admiral-class battleships. The British politician Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon (1831-1890) was a leading member of the Conservative Party and twice served as Secretary of State for the Colonies. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. The well-known English actress if the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Dame Alice Ellen Terry (1847-1928) was born to a family of actors and performed in Shakespearean roles as a child. She married the middle-aged aritist George Frederic Watts when she was only 16 but the marriage lasted less than a year. She went on to have a relationship with the architect Edward William Godwin, leaving the stage for 6 years before she resumed acting in 1874, gaining immediate acclaim. She joined Henry Irving's company as his leading lady in 1878 and was considered Britain's leading Shakespearean actress. George Bernard Shaw convinced her to take over management of London's Imperial Theatre where she opened a new play by Henrick Ibsen. The play was a failure and she returned to touring to much acclaim. …

A very scarce collection of journal issues in the original cloth binding. The Dorset County Journal was a quarterly journal, established in 1946. These issues, numbering 1 to 12 of Volume 1, start with the very first July-September 1946 issue and end with the April-June 1949 issue. The journal encompasses topics such as wildlife (mainly birds), agriculture and rural life; towns and areas of Dorset such as Poole and Chesil Beach; antiquities; historical events in Dorset; a life in the day of different occupations, including a policeman; 1940s women's fashion; and letters to the editor. Each issue contains numerous black and white photographs and illustrations, and also evocative advertisements, some of which are in colour. In the original cloth binding. Externally smart, with some marks to the boards and very light shelf wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. See her entry and that of her husband Fred Terry (1863-1933), brother of Dame Ellen Terry, and of the recipient of these letters W. J. Macqueen-Pope (1888-1960), the foremost British theatre historian of the twentieth century, in the Oxford DNB. The seven items (Neilson's five letters and carbon copies of two typed letters to her from Macqueen-Pope) are in good condition, lightly aged and creased. The first letter is signed 'Julia Neilson-Terry' and the other four 'Julia'. The first is addressed to 'Mr Macqueen Pope' and the others to 'Popie'. ONE: ALS, 1 March 1949. 3pp, landscape 12mo. On grey paper with thin mourning border. She invites him as her guest to 'a dinner given by the Saturday Club: Dame Lilian Barker J.P. etc our President is in the Chair & its usually an interesting evening'. She gives details of time and dress and names the speakers as Miss Sybil Campbell and Dr Halliday Sutherland. She realizes it is 'a long way off', but hopes to 'be lucky to have you with us', as well as Irene Vanburgh. TWO: TLS, 19 June 1949. 1p, 8vo. She thanks him for flowers and a 'sweet message', and was sorry he could not be present at the 'cheery tea' (in celebration of her eightieth birthday?): 'Of course I didn't mind you telling the Press. It was darling of you to think that I should have it, but I must confess that I was a little awed and surprised when they arrived in the garden and started to take interviews and photographs. Oh, my dear, you naughty dear! Still, a lovely dear to have thought of this old lady.' THREE: TLS, 20 June 1950. 1p, 8vo. She thanks him again for a 'lovely message' on her birthday. 'I had a happy day, but I now arrange that there shall be no more birthdays after this last!' Florid signature, in red ink, '& thank you! | Julia'. FOUR: TLS, 26 June 1951. 1p, 8vo.
