First edition of this in memoriam of Herbert Somerton Foxwell. Octavo, original wrappers. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to John Neville Keynes on the front panel, "To John Neville Keynes for auld lang syne. J. Bonar 16th January 1937." The recipient, John Neville Keynes, was an English economist and philosopher best known for his influential work in economic methodology, particularly The Scope and Method of Political Economy (1891), which helped clarify the distinction between positive and normative economics. A longtime administrator and lecturer at the University of Cambridge, he played a formative intellectual role in shaping the academic environment in which his son, economist John Maynard Keynes, developed, while also contributing independently to debates on logic, probability, and the philosophical foundations of economic science. Herbert Somerton Foxwell (1849â"1936) was a British economist and historian of economic thought whose work helped bridge classical political economy and emerging modern economic analysis. A long-serving lecturer at Cambridge and later professor at the University of London, Foxwell was particularly influential as a teacher and mentor, shaping figures such as John Maynard Keynes. He is also remembered for his extensive bibliographic and archival efforts, notably his major collection of economic literature, which reflected his belief that economic theory must be understood within its historical and institutional contexts.…

As follows: "I an surprised that you should be worrying me about paying the University Account. I explained most carefully to you the situation in regard to both accounts at the beginning of the year,& it was open to you to have declined the work if you did not like the condition. | I have no funds to pay this account, which must first be sent in to the University. There are some half dozen items to be added, which were charged to the Goldsmiths' accounts [by] my mistake. | You talk about the war crisis, but I will venture to say it has not cost you one-third of your income, as it has already cost me, to say nothing of the taxation which is to come. | Your difficulty, in peace & war, is always the same. You are trying to run the business without capital. You can't expect your customers to fund]?] you in capital." He argues that the "moratorium" makes things easier for them since, if the war created the difficulties, no-one will put pressure on them to pay. He continues, "I have done my best to keep the work in your hands, but the only return I get is to be reproached as if I were in some way a defaulter. This happens with no-one else. I have jsut received a letter asking me to meet some members of the Senate 'to consider the high cost of binding the pamphlets'. I shall be glad when it all comes to an end".…

First edition, first impression, of this collection of the economic essays of Herbert Somerton Foxwell (1849-1936), Cambridge economist and collector of economic literature, his collections forming the basis of the Goldsmiths' and Kress libraries in London and Harvard respectively. "Papers on Currency and Finance (1919) considers the subject on which Foxwell's own later academic interests were concentrated, finance and banking. The book demonstrates a very wide knowledge of banking practices, both domestic and foreign, and looks at the relationship between finance and industry. Unfortunately, few others of Foxwell's lectures and papers on this subject have survived" (Biographical Dictionary of British Economists, I, 404). Octavo.
