Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This volume brings together two of the most significant dramatic portrayals of Egypt's legendary queen, offering a unique opportunity to compare the styles and themes of two masters of the stage. George Bernard Shaw's 'Caesar and Cleopatra' presents a witty and intellectual reimagining of the early meeting between a seasoned Julius Caesar and a youthful, evolving Cleopatra. Departing from traditional romanticized versions, Shaw focuses on the nuances of power, mentorship, and political pragmatism.Complementing Shaw's work is William Shakespeare's 'Antony and Cleopatra', a towering tragedy that depicts the passionate and destructive alliance between the Roman general Mark Antony and the Egyptian monarch. Shakespeare's play is a vast exploration of the conflict between private emotion and public responsibility, set against the backdrop of an empire in transition. Together, these works explore the intersection of history and drama, showcasing how different eras have interpreted the same iconic figures. This collection serves as a vital resource for readers interested in classical history, English literature, and the evolution of dramatic storytelling, juxtaposing the philosophical humor of Shaw with the poetic grandeur of Shakespeare. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed cream wraps with pictorial ads on the rear wraps of the 1898 issues & with 2 vignettes on the front wrap of the August 1898 issue. The wraps are soiled, chipped & somewhat darkened with some small stains. There is a tear & crease to the top edge of the 1897 issue's rear wrap. Pages [97]-130 plus ads; pages [228]-265 plus ads; pages [267]-308 plus ads. The 1898 issues are illustrated with black-and-white decorations & vignettes. There is occasional soiling & the top page corners are slightly creased. There are small areas of staining to the top of the fore-edge & to the top corners of the pages in the 1897 issue. Good. An ink mark in the margin draws attention to a self-congratulatory item in the August 1898 issue [p. 303] commenting on the demise of Herbert Stone's "The Chap Book": "The inevitable has happened, and the Chap Book, after a checkered existence of some four years, has joined the great mass of other incompetents in the journalistic grave-yard." In this issue the subtitle on the front wrap is changed to "A Journal of Information for Writers".A rare 1890s periodical.…

In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Very Good. An album of late 19th century dance sheet music. Folio. Around 120 to 150 pages. Quarter black leather cloth covered boards, leather spine with raised bands tooled with gilt in six compartments with "Dances" in gilt at the top of the spine, the initials "N.L.D" in gilt on the front board, and blue endpapers. Worn boards and spine with the foot of the spine coming loose, both the front and rear hinge have been repaired, some loss of the front fly leaf, toned endpapers, and a few tears throughout but there is no loss of the sheet music which remains bright and clean, a few with an owner name or music shop stamp on the front cover, and one song may possibly have the wrong cover ("Lachtaubchen: La Rieuse"), overall very good. The album consists of 30 instrumental dance pieces for the piano, many being schottisches and lancers. The collection includes many seemingly uncommon to rare pieces which are either unrecorded by *OCLC* or located in very small numbers, and almost every piece is bound with its original front cover (some include rear covers featuring ads as well). Highlights include: "Possum Dance" (with engraved illustration of dancing possums on the front cover) by S. Bourgoin, published by J. Van Loan & Co., copyright 1982, unrecorded by *OCLC*. "New York Society Lancers" (dedicated to The Ladies of New York) by J.S. Cox, published by J. Van Loan & Co., copyright 1889, unrecorded by *OCLC*. "Dance Music from Mikado" (with an elaborately engraved illustration on the front cover) by George Wiegand, published by Wm. A. Pond & Co., copyright 1883, two in *OCLC* (a closed tear partially affecting the music though it remains complete). "Hot Time in the Old Town Schottische" (with a bold and colorful front cover illustration) by Theo. A. Metz, published by Willis, Woodward & Co., copyright 1897, three of the schottische in *OCLC*. "Society Yorke (As Danced in New York Society)" by W. Vincent Daly, published by J. Van-Loan & Co., copyright 1890, unrecorded by *OCLC*. And what appears to be an early edition of "Künstler-Quadrille" by Johann Strauss (with dampstaining along the top throughout), published by Carl Haslinger, no printed copyright, the text is in German so it's difficult to make out if this is the exact piece by Strauss or an interpretation of his work. The album also includes multiple pieces by the composers George Wiegand and Emil Waldteufel. A lovely collection of uncommon to rare late 19th century dance music. A complete list of titles is available upon request.…
