In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 8vo (21.5 cm), XVI, 224 pp, 12 plates. Publisher's cloth, spine with printed paper label (binding slightly rubbed, paper somewhat age-toned, collector's stamp on front end-paper). Second edition of scholarly and finely illustrated history of European bookbinding by Herbert Percy Horne (1864-1916),…English poet, architect, typographer, designer, and art historian, best known for his studies of Renaissance art and decorative arts. Dedicated to T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts bookbinding movement, the work examines the development of gold-tooled bindings from their technical foundations to their highest artistic achievements, combining historical narrative with close analysis of surviving examples. Horne begins with the craft of binding itself, discussing materials, tools, techniques, sewing structures, covering, decoration, and the evolution of the binder's art, before tracing the emergence of fine gold tooling in Italy and its subsequent refinement in France and England. The chapters on early Italian bindings explore the relationship between manuscript and printed-book decoration, including the work of Florentine and Venetian binders of the Renaissance; the French section discusses the great traditions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, including the ateliers associated with Grolier, Geofroy Tory, and the Ève family; while the English section follows the revival of artistic binding from Roger Payne to the modern craftsmen of the Arts and Crafts movement, including Cobden-Sanderson and Douglas Cockerell. The volume is illustrated with fine photographic plates reproducing important examples of historic and modern bindings: the Florentine binding of Caesar printed by Filippo di Giunta (1514), a Canevari binding, Grolier's copy of Bembo's Gli Asolani (1530), a Florentine manuscript binding, bindings by Geofroy Tory and Nicholas Ève, Roger Payne, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson, and Douglas Cockerell. Although modest in size, Horne's essay remains an influential contribution to the literature of book arts, notable for its combination of historical scholarship, aesthetic sensitivity, and appreciation of binding as a major form of decorative art.
