Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First Edition. 253pp. Dark brown boards, gilt lettering. illustrations. Light creasing to the spine edges, otherwise like new. Unclipped pictorial jacket has a 2" horizontal scratch on the rear panel, otherwise like new. This is an account of the Princes of Orange in the Dutch Republic from William I, "the Silent", to William V, the last and saddest, in their roles as 'stadholders.' It interweaves their personal lives and characters with the development of the unique institution of the stadholderate and the broad political history of the republic. Without attempting to engage in psychohistory, the book treats the mind and personalities of the stadholders as significant factors." One of the Cambridge Studies Early Modern History Series. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo. Published by Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ. 1978. 931 pgs. DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and front board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This is a biography of the Dutch 'Grand Pensionary' John de Witt (1625-72) , who combined a powerful intelligence with superb political skills. His political system, called the 'True Freedom' consisted of the maximum autonomy of the provinces and the exclusion of Prince William III of Orange from high office. If the combination of superb political skills and a powerful intelligence were enough to make a 'philosopher-king' such as Plato dreamed of, the Dutch 'Grand Pensionary' John de Witt (162572) would fit the prescription as well as any statesman in history. Manoeuvring among the powers of Europe in the period of France's growing ascendancy, and facing the bitter commercial and political rivalry of the English, he managed to preserve the eminent position the United Provinces had reached when Spain recognized their independence at Munster in 1648. Not until the kings of France and England combined against the Republic in 1672 did De Witt's political system, called the 'True Freedom' and consisting of the maximum autonomy of the provinces and the exclusion of Prince William III of Orange from high office, collapse during the French invasion, an event accompanied by the horrific assassination of De Witt and his brother Cornelius. EB; 8.5 X 5.6 X 0.7 inches; 243 pages.
