Previous owner's inscription title page. Top corners bumped, spine slightly faded, some light foxing to top edge. Very good condition. Herbert Basedow (1881-1933), anthropologist, geologist, explorer and medical practitioner, "was one of the few men of his time actively interested in recording traditional Aboriginal life" (ADB). Between 1903 and 1928, Basedow participated in around 12 major expeditions and some smaller trips, mainly to central and northern Australia. They were mainly to investigate mineral prospects, but Basedow also gathered ethnological data. He also concerned about the health and welfare of Aborigines, and lobbied the government. "The Australian Aboriginal" is an overview of all aspects of Aboriginal life, copiously illustrated. The ADB calls it "a positive contribution at a time when little detailed material was available to the public [.] the book encapsulated his experience with the race over twenty years.".
