First edition, first printing. Complete in four volumes. Publisher's original brown cloth, with gilt titles to the spine, borders stamped in blind to the boards and spine, and with gilt insignia to the upper board. With a black and white frontispiece in each volume, two black and white illustrations in volumes II and III, and five black and white illustrations in volume IV. A very good set, the bindings firm with a little bumping to the spine tips and corners, the cloth a little rubbed at the edges and with light fading to the bottom of the spines of volumes III and IV. The inner hinges in volumes II, III, and IV are cracked but holding. The contents, with a previous owner's signature in black ink to the front endpapers of each volume and with a couple instances of pencilled marginalia by Dr Richard Rowland in volume II and III, and a small pen notation in volume III, are otherwise clean throughout. A decent set with an interesting provenance. Each volume with the ownership inscription and date '15/6/[19]45' of Margaret Hubbard (1924-2011), an Australian-born British classical scholar, best known for her study of Propertius (1974) and for her academic and romantic connection to noted novelist Iris Murdoch, who dedicated her 1962 novel 'An Unofficial Rose' to her. Later from the library of (and with pencilled marginalia of) Dr Richard Rowland, editor and author on the Renaissance and classical mythology, and Senior Lecturer in the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. Shakespeare scholar Sir Ernest Kerchever Chambers' seminal work on Elizabethan drama remains a standard resource for early modern drama students and scholars today. Cloth. Zustand: Near fine. First Illustrated Edition. Octavo, [10], 225pp, [1]. Publisher's decorated cloth, title stamped in gilt along the spine. Complete with twelve photogravure illustrations from photographs, including frontispiece, with tissue guards and descriptive letterpress. Top edge gilt, remaining edges uncut. Internally clean. Both hinges showing wear, but stable. Ownership inscription below the inscription by Fairbanks. This copy is inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Christmas Greetings to Mrs. Winfield T. Durbin / from her friend / Charles W. Fairbanks / 1900." A great piece of Indiana political history. This copy is inscribed to the First Lady of Indiana, Bertha McCullough Durbin, the wife of Governor Winfield T. Durbin, who served as Governor of Indiana from 1901-1905. Senator Charles W. Fairbanks (1852-1918) was selected as Vice President for the 1904 election, a nod to conservative factions of the Republican Party. Roosevelt and Fairbanks were not close, with Fairbanks actively working against his Square Deal agenda. With the popularity of Roosevelt going into the 1908 election, he was free to choose his successor and named William H. Taft, bypassing his Vice President. Fairbanks retired from public life, except for an unsuccessful campaign in 1916 as Charles Evan Hughes vice-presidential nominee. Presentation copy by Charles W. Fairbanks, then United States Senator from Indiana and future Vice President of the United States, to the First Lady of Indiana, Mrs. Winfield T. Durbin. This is the first illustrated edition of Elizabeth and Her Germa (illustrator). Signed. …

First edition, first printing. Constance Spry's copy. Original beige linen boards with titles, decorations and ruled borders printed in black and green on the spine and upper board. Illustrated throughout with botanical colour plates by Millie Walters Anson. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth toned and marked, the corners bumped, the cloth with some splitting at the spine. With Constance Spry's ownership inscription to the front free endpaper, a small bookseller's label to the rear pastedown, a tiny numerical stamp to the foot of the rear free endpaper and some spotting early and late, the contents are otherwise clean throughout. A fantastic association copy. Constance Spry's copy, with her large, flamboyant signature in thick pencil on the front free endpaper. The gardener Maud Evelyn Stebbing's fourth book, a guide to the use of colour in garden design that, unusually, groups plants and flowers by colour rather than species or position. Constance Spry was a florist, teacher and cookery writer who revolutionised the art of floristry in the early 20th century with innovative, cascading shapes and the use of unconventional, 'common' plants such as bindweed and, most famously, chard leaves. The Duchess of Kent once reportedly asked Spry to leave her signature chard leaves out of an arrangement because her mother, the Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, was visiting and "might not understand". Spry and Stebbing were active in the same period, with Spry's first book, 'Flower Decoration', being published in the same year as 'Colour in the Garden'. It is easy to see how Stebbing's emphasis on colour and visual harmony would have been a useful resource for Spry's creative approach to floristry. Spry's designs became highly fashionable in upper-class British society, and she provided the floral arrangements for four royal weddings, including that of Queen Elizabeth II, as well as the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In the 1930s Spry was in a relationship with the painter Gluck, who frequently painted Spry's experimental arrangements. In 1946 Spry founded a cookery school in London with her friend Rosemary Hume. Spry, Hume and their students were tasked with catering the banquet for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, and created the now famous dish coronation chicken for the event. Spry continued to write about and practice floristry while also devoting time to cookery writing and teaching until her death in 1960. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo; pp. 176. MARGARET BURBIDGE'S COPY OF THIS SCARCE AND IMPORTANT WORK ON PURE GEOMETRY. This volume was probably acquired by Burbidge after her return to England. She had trained and then taught at ucl, and then from 1951 spent two years at the Yerkes Observatory, Wisconsin, before returning to the University of Cambridge to conduct research with her husband Geoffrey Burbidge, William Fowler and Fred Hoyle. This resulted in the monumental B2FH paper of 1957, which for the first time described the physics of stellar nucleosynthesis , i.e. the origin of all elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. From 1959 her researched turned towards the geometry of distant galaxies over a period of many years Burbidge and her collaborators analyzed the rotation curves of many galaxies, developing key insights and techniques, and adding crucial evidence to the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. This work therefore helped shape the work of one of the greats of 20th-century astrophysics. Very good condition. Inscribed by Author(s).…

FIRST EDITION. 195 x 115 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 5/8"). Three volumes. Contemporary half calf over brown marbled boards, raised bands with gilt tooling, spine panels blind-stamped in a scolloped pattern, red morocco label, marbled endpapers and edges. Front pastedown with the bookplate of the celebrated book-collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer of Eshton Hall in each volume. Provenance: Dibdin, "Reminiscences of a Literary Life" (1836), pp. 94957; De Ricci, "English Collectors of Books and Manuscripts" (1930), pp. 141-43. Extremities a bit rubbed, boards lightly chafed, occasional minor marginal stains or light patches of foxing, but a pleasing copy, generally clean and fresh, in sturdy original bindings with no significant condition issues. This novel of the British navy during the Jacobite Rebellion comes from the library of a woman described by De Ricci as "England's earliest female bibliophile" and hailed by Dibdin as "the head of all female collectors in Europe." An only child, Frances Mary Richardson Currer (1785-1861) inherited considerable assets from both her father's and her mother's families: her relative Dorothy Richardson wrote in 1815, "She is in possession of both the Richardson and Currer estates and inherits all the taste of the former family, having collected a very large and valuable library, and also possessing a fine collection of prints, shells, and fossils, in addition to what were collected by her great grandfather and great-uncle." Dibdin noted that her library at Eshton Hall was "surpassed only by those of Earl Spencer, the duke of Devonshire, and the duke of Buckingham." According to DNB, "the library had substantial holdings in natural science, topography, antiquities, and history, together with a collection of the classics. There were rarities, some early printed books, a collection of Bibles, and a fine gathering of illustrated books. . . . Dibdin first estimated the number of volumes at 15,000 and, later, 18,000. In 1852, Sir J. B. Burke put the number at 20,000." Although best known for his Leatherstocking Tales set on the early American frontier, James Fenimore Cooper (1789-1851) had originally intended a career in the navy, and spent several years at sea before an inheritance from his father allowed him to pursue a literary career. Deemed by Day "an excellent naval novel," the text here is a poignant tale of conflicting loyalties and the importance of friendship, seen through the eyes of the titular "Two Admirals," lifelong friends supporting opposing political forces in the contest over the Stuart succession to throne of Britain.…

Sylvia Plath's copy of the first edition, signed on her ex-libris bookplate, and with a gift inscription from her cherished friend Ruth Freeman on the half-title: "With Love from Ruthie to Sylvia on her [19th] Birthday, October 27, 1951". Plath wrote of this copy in her letters, "I love Come One, Come All! The illustrations alone are exquisite, and the book as a whole is an impressive addition to my slowly growing 'library'" (p. 399). Sylvia Plath and Ruth Freeman (b. 1933; no relation to the author, Don Freeman) were inseparable in childhood and celebrated many birthdays together. They partied at Plath's overnight when she turned 13, and for Freeman's 14th birthday, Plath bought them tickets to see her friend's favourite film, The Red Shoes (1948). Their families were neighbours on Johnson Avenue, Winthrop, Massachusetts, from 1937 to 1942. The pair spent "countless hours together in one house or the other. Until summer arrived, [then] the children passed the hot, muggy months playing on the beach" (Alexander, p. 25). Plath's early letters brim with enthusiasm for Freeman. On 13 July 1946, Plath wrote to her mother Aurelia, in all capitals, "Ruth Freeman is coming to [camp] and is being in my cabin when she comes on Sunday!!!" (Letters, p. 65). Plath also bonded with Freeman's mother Marion, telling her on 4 November 1946, "You will always be like a second mother to me, you know" (p. 84). After Plath left Winthrop, she and Ruth Freeman visited each other often and went to one final camp together, calling themselves "The Three Musketeers" alongside another campmate, Betsy Powely. Writing to her mother on 16 January 1954, Plath described Freeman as "such a wonderful girl - I just hope our long friendship will last for always!" (p. 226). The following year, Freeman married Arthur Geissler and chose Plath as maid of honour. Freeman continued to support Plath during her development as both writer and mother: a copy of Woman's Day magazine, given from Freeman to Plath in 1962, contained plans Plath used to make a cradle for her daughter's dolls. In 2016, Ruth Freeman Geissler interviewed with Smith College after donating correspondence between her mother and Plath to the college's Sylvia Plath collection. The biographer Peter K. Steinberg argues that Plath's relationship with the Freeman family grants a unique perspective on the writer's life. The letters between Sylvia Plath and Marion Freeman "show Plath being gracious and affectionate - qualities not often associated with her. With Plath if there was another female involved, there was usually a sense of rivalry. That didn't exist with Ruth Geissler or Marion Freeman" (Smith College). This copy is a first printing of an account of life in New York by children's writer Don Freeman. The lure of the Big Apple clearly resonated with Plath, who moved to the city in 1953 to edit for Mademoiselle magazine. Paul Alexander, Rough Magic: A Biography of Sylvia Plath, 2004; Karen V. Kukil, "Letters to a 'Second Mother': New Items in Smith Collection Show Another Side of Sylvia Plath '55", Smith College, 17 March 2016; Peter K. Steinberg & Karen V. Kukil, eds, The Letters of Sylvia Plath, 2017. Octavo. Original pale green boards, spine lettered in purple, front cover illustrated in purple, pictorial brown endpapers. With dust jacket. Full-page illustrations and line drawings in the text by Don Freeman. Small wear to ends and corners, faint spots to edges; jacket unclipped, spine sunned, a couple of marks, slight wear to extremities: a very good copy in like jacket. …

Sylvia Plath's copy, signed on her ex-libris bookplate, which partially covers her brother Warren's ownership signature. An earlier gift inscription from their mother Aurelia on the half-title reads: "To Warren from mother, Christmas 1948". Neat ink underlinings to two stories indicate that Sylvia or Warren read at least Faulkner's "Turn About" and Steinbeck's "Red Pony". At the time of Aurelia's inscription, she shared a bedroom with her daughter in their Wellesley home, moving into Warren's room when he left for Exeter the following year. Sylvia was 16 and already writing of that festive season, "A light, powdery snow has covered the earth. Carols of Christmas pour forth into the cold night air, and the frosty little stars themselves seem to twinkle with delight" (20 December 1948). Sylvia's younger brother and only sibling Warren (1935-2021) was also a precocious reader, and as children they competed for their father Otto's approval with recitals of poetry and stories. Outside of the home, Sylvia was further encouraged to read the modern classics by her teacher Wilbury Crockett from 1947 to 1950. Called the "Crocketeers", Sylvia and her classmates "acquired what their teacher called a 'life library', because he suggested that they buy the books they read, some forty each year" (Wagner-Martin, p. 43). She was also contributing her own short stories and poems to the school paper, the Christian Science Monitor, and Seventeen. After moving to New York to edit Mademoiselle, Sylvia confided about her changing circumstances to Warren, who himself had just received a scholarship at Harvard: "I have been very ecstatic, horribly depressed, shocked, elated, enlightened, and enervated - all of which goes to make up living very hard and newly" (21 June 1953). The book reportedly came privately from the Maurice F. Neville collection. Peter K. Steinberg & Karen V. Kukil, eds, The Letters of Sylvia Plath, 2017; Linda Wagner-Martin, Sylvia Plath: A Biography, 1988. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt on black ground framed with gilt rules, patterned endpapers, top edge grey. Remnants of removed bookplate underneath Plath's. A little light shelfwear, couple of marks to cloth, gentle creasing to lower corners of contents from prior water exposure. A very good copy.…

A superb and unique political artefact: a book owned by Britain's first and longest-serving prime minister, Robert Walpole, and by the first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. The volume is a collection of the writings of Francis Osborne (1593-1659), one of the leading essayists and political observers of the 17th century. Walpole has signed his name on the front free endpaper and inscribed a quote from Osborne's satirical essay on the character of a cook: "A Cooke is a baud to the mouth" [sic]. Thatcher has inserted a handwritten note on 10 Downing Street's letterhead: "This book was owned by Robert Walpole and given to me by Tim Bell". Bell (1941-2019) was her chief public relations adviser, who created the famous "Labour Isn't Working" poster and was instrumental in Thatcher's three general election victories. As a humorous take on the title of the first book, Advice to a Son, Thatcher presented the book to her son Mark, from whom it was acquired. The volume also has the early 19th-century bookplate of Cholmondeley Castle library, built by a descendant of Robert Walpole, alongside the bookplate of noted bibliophile Arnold Muirhead (1900-1988). Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. ESTC R25511; R234716; R220295; R200740; R200748. 5 works bound in 1, duodecimo (145 x 80 mm). Contemporary calf, 19th-century green label lettered in gilt to spine, spine ruled in gilt and blind, covers ruled in blind with blind-stamped floral motifs, red edges. Housed in a dark brown cloth flat-back box by the Chelsea Bindery. Minor restoration at extremities, slight chip to calf on rear cover, very occasional short closed tears without loss to text, a few pages closely cropped with very occasional minor loss to text, tiny contemporary ink annotation to first title page, pencilled library marks on other title pages. A very good copy.…

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the photography editor for this title to Joan Didion and her husband on the front free endpaper, "For Joan & John - as we slouch towards this next millennium - I thank you for all your inspiration & kindness in this one. Alison Morley Oct 22 1998". Didion had a column in Life, starting in the late 60s, and her daughter was a photo editor for Elle magazine who likely worked with Morley. The inscription references Didion's book, Slouching Towards Bethlehem. Quarto. Colour illustrations throughout. Original black boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Spine ends and head of rear cover just bumped; jacket unclipped, minor creasing and one nick to edges: a near-fine copy in fine jacket. …

A resonant literary artefact from a formative period of Mitchell's life: her family's copy of a dictionary used in her early days at Smith College and inscribed by her upon enrolment. A gift from her father, a prominent Atlanta lawyer and historian, it is inscribed by both generations on the front pastedown: "Margaret Mitchell, Smith College, Sept. 24, 1918", and above, her father's inscription from his own university days: "Eugene Muse Mitchell, University of Georgia, December 15, 1882". Both father and daughter have practised their signatures elsewhere in the volume. It was Mitchell's suffragist mother, May Belle Stephens Mitchell, who encouraged her to attend Smith, the prestigious female liberal arts school; she wanted her daughter to be educated as preparation for life's vagaries. May Belle loomed large as a figure of admiration and influence in Mitchell's early years, but she did not live to witness the fruits of her daughter's schooling and the literary success of Gone with the Wind. In 1919 she died of influenza. This and the death of Mitchell's fiancé in action during the First World War prompted Mitchell to abandon her studies after her freshman year. She left Massachusetts and returned to the South to assume a role in her family's household, supporting her father and stepping into her mother's role of a society hostess. 2 works in 1, octavo (188 x 140 mm), presumably issued thus. Early 20th-century black textured coated cloth, cloth labels lettered in manuscript. Housed in a custom green half morocco slipcase. Annotations to rear blank and throughout in an unidentified hand. Spines ends worn, repair to covers, inner hinges strengthened with linen, spine labels toned and lifting slightly, couple of small damp stains to edges, loss to lower outer corner of first title page, small tear to pp. 246-7 in second work, contents toned.…
