Previous owner's inscription to front paste-down. Some occasional mild cracking to gutters throughout, binding remains reasonably firm. Cracking to hinges, no damage to end papers. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Mild crushing to spine ends. Sunning to spine. Gilt lettering is darkened. Split to spine heads and tail.

Original printed paper covers, landscape format 28 x 21cm. iv + 20 + (8) plates containing numerous illustrations printed to one side only, lithographed by the author. Ex-reference library with bookplate and stamps. Covers good only, worn to the extremities with minor loss, darkened with some staining. Possibly recased as the underlying green cloth and endpapers look to be more recent. Binding secure. Interiors very good, tanned and spotted with some light creasing, except for Plate III which has a short zig-zag tear with concertina creasing to the bottom edge, without affecting the image. George Henslow (1835-1925) was Lecturer on Botany at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School, at the Birkbeck Institute, and Examiner in Natural Science for the College of Perceptors, and a noted advocate of Lamarckian evolutionary thought. No date or edition indicated, however, probably the first edition 1879 in line with Copac and OCLC estimates, with reference to a Jan 1879 work in the author's introduction and he held the above-mentioned positions until 1880. Scarce - 13 locations traced including 9 on Copac, with 2 additional copies of the 3rd edition on OCLC.

Wear to exterior as shown with rear board detached, front board nearly detached, general marks and scuffs, small loss to top of spine. Title with blind stamp of Wigan Free Public Library to bottom outer corner. Pages with a total of 8 plates, plus illustrations in the text. Mostly marginal age toning and the odd little mark here and there, otherwise pages are generally clean as shown. Size: 21cm by 13.5cm. Pages: v, [1], 510pp, 8 plates.

Neatly pencilled ownership inscription to verso of ffep with note stating that all marginal numbers refer to Cassell's 5 volume 'Familiar Wild Flowers'. These marginal notes are mainly written in pencil although there are one or two in ink. Covers worn and bumped with small tears to spine extremities. Lightly foxed throughout. A tactile little copy which looks and feels as though it might have spent a lot of time in and out of the pocket of a tweed jacket!

The first edition of this very scarce work.In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with printed paper covers.Intended for the use of botany students, this work offers an illustrative guide to the structural properties of various flora found typically in British landscapes.With a plethora of charming lithographs carried out by the author, George Henslow, an Anglican curate, botanist and interestingly a notable defender of Lamarckian evolution.With eight plates of illustrations. Collated complete from copies held institutionally. In the original quarter cloth, with printed paper covers. Externally, worn, with a few chips to the printed paper cover and damp staining to the extremities. With edge wear and a loss to the front board. Marks to the boards. Front hinge is tender. Internally, generally firmly bound, with the front free endpapers separated due to front hinge tenderness, but remaining attached. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the occasional spots throughout and tide marks affecting the endpapers. Good Only. book.

3 pp, 4to. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with minor traces of stub adhering to the blank reverse of second leaf. The year 1832 has been added in pencil in a contemporary hand. The letter is on paper watermarked 1831. Docketed at head 'Braybrooke Ld.' He begins by informing Henslow that Lord Grenville has lent him 'the Book in which his Notes upon the growth of Trees, during many years, had been made. He assures me that nothing worth your notice will be found among the MS remarks, but I am not of that opinion. Ld G is however very fond of the book as of an old acquaintance, & the entries if once lost can never be replaced, as no other Copy exists.' He feels 'very responsible' for the volume, but does not 'hesitate to entrust it to you knowing that you will lock it up & return it by a safe messenger'. The Braybrookes are 'stationary' at Audley End, and will be happy to see Henslow, if he wishes to return the volume in person. 'I have also a large specimen of lilac wood at your service, should you not have one already.' He is enclosing 'a paper which I copied from a loose MS document in my Evelyn's Sylva'. He ends the letter with a report of the fruit-bearing properties of Dr Clarke's mulberry tree: 'the indented leaves were also all on the lower part of the tree only, those above being all apparently of the common species'. In a postscript he reports that he has 'received no answer from Mr Blackie about the pruning system, perhaps he is afraid of entering the lists with you Cambridge Professors! ! !' The Prime Minister William Wyndham Grenville (1759-1834), Baron Grenville, planted at least 2500 trees at Dropmore House, and at the time of his death his pinetum contained the largest collection of conifer species in Britain.
