Original staple bound printed wraps 22 x 34cm. xiv + 77pp containing 184 items; 7pp. Good, tanned with creasing and minor loss to front wrap. A lengthy contemporary press cutting 15 x 60cm in 2 columns of small font text, provides a detailed summary of Cd. 7628 and the related events (headlined "Great Britain and Turkey / The Official Record of Events / Remarkable Correspondence / Patience under Provocation", source not known). Dating from 3 Aug to 4 Dec 1914, these documents trace the events leading to Turkey's entry into the War on the side of Germany. The correspondents are primarily Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey, Sir Louis du Pan Mallet (Ambassador to Turkey), and Mr Henry Beaumont (Charge d'Affaires at Constantinople). Cd. 7628 starts with the detention of the Turkish warship Osman I then under construction in Britain, then covers the build up of German military presence in Constantinople starting with the pursuit of German warships Goeben and Breslau, Turkish mobilisation towards Egypt with emissaries sent to India and Yemen, abolition of the Ottoman Capitulations (trade and related concessions), the activity of German agents in Syria and Egypt, the Red Sea and Persian Gulf, etc, and the deployment of German ships into the Black Sea, where on 29 Oct they attacked Russian ports, signaling Ottoman entry into the war. Cd. 7716 contains Mallet's report to Grey dated 20 Nov, following his departure from Constantinople on 1 Nov, and Grey's reply of 4 Dec.
