Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. According to Short's entry in the Oxford DNB, he 'had many friends among the Tractarians, and wrote (but did not publish) a defence of Tract 90, though he voted for the condemnation of W. G. Ward's Ideal of a Christian Church in 1845. In 1846 he delivered at Oxford the Bampton lectures entitled The Witness of the Spirit with our Spirit'. ONE: 'Tuesday | June 4'. 3pp., 12mo. He begins by stating that he is enclosing the 'Extracts from the Tracts', together with Harington's 'paper of observations'. He continues: 'Newman directed my attention on the subject of Invocations & Paryers for the dead to Tracts 71 & 72. These he said would furnish a "MacMandate" against any supposed to in Tract 75. It is certainly but fair that those who undertake to criticize their expressions should examine the whole body of their teaching which appears to be carried on systematically and so we must read all the Tracts I suppose . . The world will not certainly and I fear not even that part of it which calls itself religious.' He gives details of two books which he has bought and ends with a comment concerning 'Hume of '. TWO: 'Wednesday. Mh. 13.' 3pp., 12mo. Presumably referring to the Bishop of Oxford, he writes that he has read Harington's 'letters to the Bishop with the attention the subject deserves. They remind me of a game of billiards where one player so places the balls that the adversary must almost inevitably pocket himself off the red and so lose the game. The Bishop however did not pocket himself but made a push for another part of the table.' The matter in question should be decided by a 'national Synod'. He agrees with the Bishop 'that practically we should lay as few obstacles as we can in the way of a returning Schismatic'. He end with reference to 'the New Poor Law' and 'the comparative comfort of the Agricultural Labourer'. From the Harington family papers.…

Rev. Charles Harington [sic] was grandson of Sir John Edward Harington (1760-1831) of Ridlington, 8th Baronet, and the item is from the Harington papers. The full title reads: 'The Rectory, Stoke Lacy | Catalogue of the Valuable and Modern Furniture | Including Iron Bedsteads, Blankets and Quilts, Chests of Drawers, Mahogany and Painted Wardrobes, Dairy & Kitchen Requisites, Bacon, Whitechapel Trap, Saddles, Casks, Hurdles, & numerous Effects,| To be sold by Auction, by Oakley & Son | On Thursday, 24th. September, 1868, | At the Rectory, Stoke Lacy, Four Miles from Bromyard, | By Order of the Administratrix of the Late Rev. Charles Harrington. [sic]' At foot of page: 'The Furniture, &c. is Equal to New, and will be Sold without any Reserve. An early attendance is respectfully solicited, as the Sale will commence punctually at Half-Past Twelve o'Clock. | Catalogues may be had at Oakley's Printing Office, and on application, from the Auctioneers, Bromyard.' Printed on one side of a 56 x 44 cm. piece of wove paper. Laid out in characteristic mid-Victorian style mixing types and point sizes. The lower half of the poster carries the auction catalogue of 218 lots (from '1 Iron pig trough' to '218 Small [Book shelves] abd twi cabe seated chairs') in eight columns, divided into: Yard, Cellar, &c.; Oak Hogsheads; Greenhouse; Brewhouse & Dairy; Scullery; Kitchen; Servants' hall; Entrance Hall; Butler's Pantry; Library; Dressing Room; Attic; Smoke Room. Thirteen items from the Harington family papers. Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, 12th Baronet, was educated at Eton and Christ College, Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1886, he practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899, serving in that capacity until returning home in 1913. In later years he acted as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire. The collection is in fair condition, aged and worn. ONE: Printed document completed in manuscript, signed by the Governor of Gibraltar Sir Robert Biddulph (1839-1918), docketed by Harington 'Letters patent appointing Sir R. Harington temporarily Chief Justice of Gibraltar', dated 8 May 1892. The document, with damaged seal of Queen Victoria under paper, appoints 'His Honour Sir Richard Harington, Baronet, Judge of the County Court of Worcester [] to act as Chief Justice of Gibraltar, during the absence on leave of His Honour Sir Henry James Burford Burford Hancock Knight, Companion of Our Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George'. TWO: Typed document signed by Colonial Secretary of Gibraltar Henry More Jackson (1849-1908), docketed 'letters Patent appointing Sir Richard Harington Bt acting Chief Justice of Gibraltar', dated March 1901. SIX: Printed pink-paper 'Officer's Pass', made out to Harington, and giving him 'permission to pass along the roads (but not off them, nor along the footpaths) comprised in the triangle Willis's Signal Station and Windmill Hill Gate'. Signed by Crawford, and dated 31 March 1901. SEVEN and EIGHT: Two duplicated letters, in facsimile manuscript, from the Assistant Military Secretary. 14 and 15 March 1901; the first from Government House, the second from 'The Convent'. Each 1p., 12mo. The two relating to a visit by 'the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York'. The first, with the names of 'Sir R. and Lady Harington' added, an invitation to 'the Dinner to be given by His Royal Highness on board the "Ophir" on the 21st. March. The second, with 'The Acting Chief Justice' added, inviting Harington to 'the Landing Stage on H. M. Dock [] to receive Their Royal Highnesses'. TEN: Notebook, with waxed black cloth cover, containing itemised manuscript account of expenditure on food.
