In den Warenkorb4pp., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, disbound, with evidence of side stitching and damage at foot of spine. Taking as his text a speech by Brougham 'vainly opposing the third reading of the Factories Bill, (1844)', Hardcastle gives his own view, concluding: 'It is scarcely too much to say that the step gained by the passing of Married Women's Property Act (1870) would be more than retraced; and a new force would be given to the argument urged against extending the suffrage to women, - that persons too helpless to be trusted to dispose of their own labour, cannot be trusted to make laws for the Empire.' Three copies on COPAC.

In den Warenkorb2 vols., 12mo, pp. xii, 354; iv, 366. Old grey boards, printed paper labels to spines, publication date in black to tails of spines. A little spotting. Some wear to extremities, portion of spine covering of vol. 1 defective, revealing cloth spine and (curiously) an earlier printed paper label. The only novel by artist and etcher William Henry Pine (1770-1843), who used the same pseudonym for his art criticism, first published earlier the same year. The title date refers to the day in 1660 when Charles II was restored to the crown. This copy has an unusual binding - standard plain boards, but with an area of damage to one spine which reveals another binding beneath the paper. The revealed area shows a cloth spine with a printed paper label, although not enough of this label is visible to permit its reading - perhaps this copy was damaged early on and re-covered.

In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). An early edition of William Henry Pyne's only novel, set within the period of the English Restoration. Second edition. Complete in two volumes. Uniformly bound in quarter pebbled cloth, with marbled paper covered boards. This was the only novel of William Henry Pyne, better known as an artist specialising in picturesque settings rendered in pen, ink and watercolour. As a writer under Ephraim Hardcastle, he wrote gossipy columns on art for the Literary Gazette. The title referes to the date of Charles II's return to London in triumph following his proclamation as King, marking the return of monarchy. The novel is therefore steeped in historical context of this time in history, depicting the manners of the English during this time with references to real figures such as James Shirley, George Fox and Robert Walker. Uniformly bound in quarter pebbled cloth, with marbled paper covered boards.Externally, smart, with fading to the spines and rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Damp stain to Vol II front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages with scattered spots throughout. Very Good. book.
