Henry Treece (22 December 1911 - 10 June 1966) was a British poet and writer who also worked as a teacher and editor. He wrote a range of works but is mostly remembered as a writer of historical novels. He published five volumes of poetry: 38 Poems, then Invitation and Warning; The Black Seasons; The Haunted Garden; and The Exiles. He appeared in the 1949 The New British Poets: an anthology edited by Kenneth Rexroth; but from 1952 with The Dark Island he devoted himself to fiction. His best known are his historical novels, particularly those set in the Viking Age. Many of his novels are set in transitional periods in history, where more primitive societies are forced to face modernization, e.g. the end of the Viking period, or the Roman conquest of Britain. His play Carnival King (Faber & Faber) was produced at Nottingham Playhouse in 1953. In World War II he served as an intelligence officer in the RAF and helped John Pudney edit Air Force Poetry. Ronald Ewart Oakeshott (25 May 1916 - 30 September 2002) was a British illustrator, collector, and historian who wrote on medieval arms and armor. He was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, and was a Founder Member of the Arms and Armour Society. He created a classification system of the medieval sword, the Oakeshott typology, a systematic organization of medieval weaponry. "Whether we like it or not," writes Henry Treece in his Introduction, "man is a fighting animal, for all his words of peaceâ"Dare we say even, that our sports and pastimes are free from conflict and death? . . . this book is meant to spy on [the fighting man], down the centuries, as he goes about his fundamental occupation of proving his mastery against all comers." Together Henry Treece and Ewart Oakeshott present a panorama of history through the account of how men have fought through the ages, from early times to the end of the seventeenth century. Seven types of fighting men are described: the charioteer; the Roman legionary; the Viking; the heavy cavalryman; the longbowman; the pikeman; and the musketeer. These were drawn by various artists, the most famous of whom was Leslie Ward who used the 'nom de crayon' of "Spy". This portrait will come mounted/matted and ready to frame using archivist quality materials, mount size 18 x 12 inches, 47 x 31 cms. It will be presented in a cellophane wrapper with our label guaranteeing authenticity. We pack very well, between sheets of hardboard.
