Paper dimensions 25.5 x 19 cm. Plate dimensions 22 x 16 cm. The head-and-shoulders portrait itself is oval, 7 cm high and 5.5 cm wide, contained in a square 11 x 9.5 cm, and with the caption beneath it. Printed on aged paper, with the image itself and the caption are clean and crisp, but the paper carries a crease to the margin,… and there is light staining intruding into the surrounding square. Dibdin gives an account of Miller, whose son was the noted bookseller William Miller of Albemarle Street, in his 'Bibliomania' (1811 ed., pp.630-31). The National Portrait Gallery copy of this item, purchased in 1955, is NPG D13660.

A fine stipple engraved oval portrait of the Scottish explorer Mungo Park (1774-1806), engraved by Thomas Dickinson after Edridge and published as the frontispiece to his 'Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa'. Under the patronage of Sir Joseph Banks and the A…frican Association, Park travelled to Africa to seek the source of the River Niger (1795-7). His expedition was delayed by captivity and illness (he spent seven months convalescing in a man's home), and he was believed dead when he returned to Britain. His detailed account of his travels gave Europeans one of the first accurate descriptions of the African interior and its inhabitants. He wrote that the Mandinka he met being taken to the European slave ships believed they were going to be eaten by the whites! His summation that 'whatever difference there is between the negro and European, in the conformation of the nose, and the colour of the skin, there is none in the genuine sympathies and characteristic feelings of our common nature' did much for the Abolitionist cause. Park returned to the Niger in 1805; this time his luck deserted him and he drowned trying to escape a native attack.

Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. Watercolor on ivory. Approximately 3" x 3½". Oval painting in older wooden and metal frame with purple velvet back, with curved glass over the portrait. Small scratch on the glass, frame a little rubbed but easily near fine. Portrait of Park in a blue coat with gold buttons and a white stock. A nicel…y executed watercolor portrait on ivory after the portrait of Park by Henry Edridge. Park (1771-1806), an unemployed 22-year-old Scottish doctor became a famous explorer of Africa on behalf of the African Association. His second expedition claimed his life and that of all but three of his large contingent of soldiers and sailors but his legacy was that he effectively opened up the interior of Africa for further exploration.
