Presentation copy written in pencil [to Stanley]: 'Kind Regards of the author Solon Doggett Quincy Mass.' Handwritten letter from Sarah H. Doggett to Henry Morton Stanley at the Hotel Brunswick written on headed notepaper from The Brunswick, Barnes & Dunklee, Boston P. O. Address, "Back Bay, Boston", undated and consisting of about 150 words in which she says she realises meeting Stanley would be impossible due to his busy schedule. She presents the book on behalf of her husband, having travelled to Boston specifically for the purpose. Her husband, who saw Stanley's first book and then wrote 'Tanganika', has become consumptive and asks to be excused for taking the liberty of dedicating the poem to Stanley. 'Will you please accept it and read the poem?' As an afterthought she adds that Doggett is the son and grandson of ministers. Solon Doggett (1845-1933) artist and poet. Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) the famous explorer of Central Africa who searched for Dr.Livingstone. Very good indeed. Very good indeed. Signedes.
