In den WarenkorbGhA, 410. - Beil. Münch. med. Wschr. - München, J.F. Lehmann Verlag, 1928, 16 x 24,5 cm.

Pilet & Cougnard). In original light blue printed wrappers (lower righthand corner of first cover with small loss, replaced by matching paper, a small tear in upper margin of front. restored). Erste holländische Ausgabe, im gleichen Jahr kurz vor der deutschen Erstausgabe erschienen. Nach der französischen Originalausgabe war die holländische Übersetzung eine der ersten Übersetzungen. Very rare first Dutch translation of the Swiss philantropist, who received the Nobel Peace Prize award in 1901. Known nowadays as the man whose ideas led to the organization of the International Red Cross and Switzerland as a humanitarian state. This work ?in which Dunant describes the conditions at the Battle of Solferino, prompted the eventual acceptance of the Geneva Convention in 1863 and the formation of the International Red Cross? (Heirs of Hippocrates, 1945). The Dutch translation is the first translation, shortly followed by a German- and later an English version. "Dr Basting was much more than just Dunant's Dutch translator: without Dr. Basting's political commitment, Red Cross probably wouldn't exist. No copy of this exceedingly scarce and highly important Dutch translation of Dunant?s seminal text in the Swiss National Library. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl. VAT/TVA (only Switzerland) & postage. Comp. Garrison & Morton 2166; cf. Suzanne Oswald: Henri Dunant. In den Warenkorb4to. 24 1/2 pp. 8vo. 29 1/2 pp. 1 Kuvert. Exceptional correspondence documenting Dunant's humanitarian work and his own account of the origins and early history of the Red Cross. The letters are addressed to a young Russian (Nadine Kolatschevskaia) woman preparing a study on the biography and genesis of the Red Cross.Writing from Heiden (12 November 1896), Dunant reports that he is "indisposé et fatigué". He notes that his works Le Paupérisme en Angleterre and Le Cri de souffrance "sont en manuscrits, ils n'ont pas encore été imprimés", and offers to "copier quelques fragments", as he had done from his "gros manuscrit contre le "Militarisme"" for Bertha von SUTTNER. He proposes to lend "ma monographie sur Tunis, qui date de 1857 & le volume Charité & fraternité internationales", and mentions sending to Dr. IDELSON "le grand ouvrage de Cazenove, qui est d'une entière exactitude sur l'OEuvre des Blessés".On 20 November, having learned "que vous faisiez un travail sur les origines de la Croix Rouge", he offers to send "quelques feuilles inédites sur les origines de l'OEuvre dès 1859", together with Prof. LUEDER's book on "la Convention de Genève". Dunant stresses that neither General DUFOUR nor the Geneva committee had knowledge of the alleged historical "precedents": "Personne dans notre Comité Genevois n'en avait connaissance", comparing the situation to the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. He encloses an autobiographical note listing his honorary functions, from "Président d'Honneur (nommé en 1865) du Comité central Belge pour les Blessés de la guerre" to "Membre honoraire de la Société Fédérale Suisse d'Utilité publique, 1895".Further letters include 12 pages of "notes sur les toutes premières origines de la pensée qui, aujourd'hui, a pu conquérir le monde entier, sauf la Chine", accompanied by Dunant's modest disclaimer that he has "rien de commun avec les grands écrivains tels que Chateaubriand & Jean-Jacques Rousseau". He sends copies of Un Souvenir de Solférino, Fraternité et Charité internationales en temps de guerre, and Lueder's Die Genfer Convention, and recalls the women of Castiglione who "ne faisaient aucune différence entre Français & Autrichiens", as well as himself as a "modeste jeune homme de 31 ans" struck by the horrors following the battle and conceiving the idea of universal fraternity. In later letters (December 1896), Dunant discusses Emperor Alexander II of Russia and his struggles surrounding the question of prisoners of war, describing himself caught "entre l'enclume russe & le marteau anglais" during the Brussels Congress of 1874, and denouncing attacks from Geneva after publishing a Bulletin de l'Alliance Universelle bearing a red cross. He emphasizes that "la Convention de Genève a donné l'exemple" for later universal conventions of humanity and social economy.Further letters from 1897 comment on delays in receiving Rudolf Müller's Entstehungsgeschichte des Roten Kreuzes und der Genfer Konvention, the fate of the Alliance Universelle, thwarted by "le peu de persévérance des Français & les intrigues bigotes des fanatiques Calvinistes", and on his declining health: "mon extrême faiblesse [] ne me permet pas de travailler comme je voudrais".A highly significant and revealing group, offering first-hand testimony by Henri Dunant on the intellectual, moral, and political genesis of the Red Cross, as well as on the personal struggles of its founder.…
