Couverture recto avec très légère trace de mention d'appartenance au bord supérieur et petits plis au coin inférieur droit, léger pli au dos, couverture verso avec très petits plis aux coins gauches et minuscule déchirure recollée au bord inférieur, sinon excellent état. Récit du périple fait à cheval et à pied, en 1952-1953, par l'auteur au Nord Laos pour rechercher les causes de la profonde divergence qu'il avait constatée entre le bouddhisme laotien et le bouddhisme indien et qui lui permit d'établir également que certaines populations chinoisantes y étaient fortement imprégnées de culture indienne. La guerre d'Indochine est présente, les troupes Vietminh ayant pénétré au Laos et des combats ayant éclaté à Luang-Prabang. Après le Nord-Laos, Deydier se rend au Nord-Vietnam, dans la vallée de Lai Chau et constate l'enchevêtrement de traditions très diverses et encore très vivantes dans les deux régions. Anonymous English translation of Deydier's work on Laotian Buddhism and local spiritual practices, based on his 18-month stay in the Mekong Valley and comparative studies of Laotian and Indian Buddhist manuscripts. LOKAPALA was the last book by the French philologist, historian, and Resistance fighter. From the unnamed translator's preface: "The war which forms the background for all Indochinese action, appears suddenly in the "journal de route" of the author; it includes the invasion of Laos and the battle of Luang Prabang, [less] the reports of combats than a document on Laotian psychology and the importance of traditional spiritual forces." This translation was apparently never published; OCLC notes only the original French edition and a contemporary German translation. The preface records the author's death in December, 1954, and can thus be dated to 1955 or later. One other copy of an English version of LOKAPALA, with slightly different subtitle ("Lokapala: the spirits and sourceres of North Laos") is held by the University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies Archives and credited to translator Simon Jervis-Reed; no translator's name or publication information in this copy confirms a connection. . 9.75'' x 7.5''. Original typescript, bound in gilt-stamped red cloth boards. Marbled Laotian-style endpapers. 126 pages, rectos only. Corners bumped and scuffed; general edgewear and rubbing. Pages mildly toned with occasional light rippling. A few corrections in ink to text.
