Äußerst seltene Sammlung von Unterschriften von Wittbooi/Nama-Anführern, von denen einige während der Niederschlagung von Aufständen der Herero und Nama gegen die deutsche Kolonialmacht in der Kolonie Deutsch-Südwestafrika (1904-08) getötet wurden. Neben Hendrik Witbooi, der sich um 1888 und nicht gewaltlos zum…Führer der Namagesellschaften aufgeschwungen hatte, unterzeichnen sein Sohn und Nachfolger Samuel Isaak Witbooi (1865-1928), Petrus Jod (1863-1905), ein naher Verwandter von Hendrik, Salomon Isaak, ein Unterkapitän der Witbooi, und Fanuel Jager, der seinerzeit Gemeindeälteste der Witbooi. Die Abbildungen zweigen Omaruru, eine Militärstation der Deutschen Schutztruppe, einen Ochsenreiter, das Dörfchen Gibeon (seit 1863 Stammessitz der Witbooi), die Deutsche Schule und Keetmanshoop, die Regionshauptstadt der Kharas-Region im Süden Namibias. - Hendrik Witbooi hatte sich zehn Jahre lang der deutschen Kolonialmacht widersetzt, wurde aber schließlich militärisch unterworfen und zur Unterstützung gezwungen. Nach weiteren zehn Jahren erzwungener Kooperation hatte er dann 1904 den Deutschen offiziell den Krieg erklärt und war an die Spitze des Nama-Aufstands getreten. Unter der neuen deutschen Führung von Generalleutnant von Trotha und mit Wissen und Billigung von Kaiser Wilhelm I. und Generalstabschef Alfred von Schlieffen hatte sich der Kampf der Deutschen Schutztruppe um die Vorherrschaft in Deutsch-Südwestafrika dann zu einem Vernichtungskrieg hochgeschaukelt; diesem ersten Völkermord des 20. Jahrhunderts sollten bis 1908 etwa 80.000 Menschen zum Opfer fallen. Nach dem Tod von Hendrik Witbooi, der im November 1905 an den Folgen eines Gewehrtreffers im Oberschenkel verstarb, zerfiel sein Stamm in mehrere Gruppen, von denen sich Samuel Isaak und Hans Hendrik mit ihren Gefolgsleuten schon im selben Monat kampflos den deutschen Truppen ergaben. - Hendrik Witbooi gehört zu den neun Nationalhelden, die in Namibia verehrt werden. Seine Tagebücher, die im Nationalarchiv von Namibia in Windhoek aufbewahrt werden, wurden im Jahr 2005 in die Liste des Weltdokumentenerbes aufgenommen.
