The evidence on which an answer may be based is contained in the preceding four lists. An examination of this evidence reveals a number of interesting facts, and a reasonably definite answer to the main problem. The evidence is summarized in Chart I,1 which is a frequency distribution chart of the material contained in Lists B and D (Lists A and C are cross-reference lists and contain the same material). Of the vertical columns (hereafter called simply columns), columns 2-19 are headed by the Old English prefixes; of the horizontal lines (hereafter called simply lines), lines 2-26 are headed by the Latin prefixes. Numbers at the intersections of columns and lines indicate the number of times that compounds of the Latin prefix heading the line are rendered by compounds of the Old English prefix heading the column.
