Dybwad (entry 1656, for Portfolio of photographs of the World's Fair) describes the part issue as "16 numbers . 244-306 total pages (mostly unpaged illus). Bound numbers consist of 15-18? The 306 p. version contains additional art illus. from the Fine Arts Gallery." Variants described in Dybwad entry 1599, for the versions bound as The Columbian gallery, give page counts for the illustrations of 230, 244, 256, and 306 pages. The cloth bindings also vary.

His work ran the gamut from color plat…es for novels (some still in print today with Hencke's images) to more traditional paintings of landscapes.Many of his illustrations of ladies in their finery set fashion trends of the era (in the same manner as Charles Dana Gibson's "Gibson Girl" did), but Hencke's scenes of children in playful reverie are probably the most collectible of all.".
