This is a lightly written and amusing novel set in the Ireland of today, a pocket of Europe which has successfully survived the modernisation of her neighbours. Townsend is a young man seeking a quiet life after having survived with distinction, first the Second World War and then Korea. He gets a job helping to compile a "definitive history" of the Second World War for the Ehrenwalder Foundation of Chicago and in the course of his researches come across "the horses". There were £47,000 worth of the them sent to Turkey by the British Government, which at the same time as improving the Turkish bloodstock would also increase the British Government's value in the eyes of this important neutral country. A really good read.

A Very Good copy with foxing to edges and endpapers, slightly musty, a few tiny stains to top edge, in a Very Good+ unclipped dust jacket, a little short for the book (as appears to be typical), foxed, a little edge-worn and scuffed. The basis of the 1953 film directed by John Huston. The author was a British journalist caught up in the Red Scare, and father of journalists Andrew, Patrick, and Alexander Cockburn, the latter of whom borrowed this book's title for the title of his opinion column.

First Edition. First edition. A REVIEW COPY with slip laid in. Helvick was the pseudonym of Claud Cockburn, a noted British radical journalist. Born in Peking, China, in 1904, he was the scion of an aristocratic family--one of his ancestors was the British commander who ordered the burning of the White House during the War of 1812 and his cousin was the novelist Evelyn Waugh. The book was made into a 1953 film directed by John Huston, with the screenplay by Huston and Truman Capote, and starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida. Huston intended it to be a tongue-in-cheek spoof of "The Maltese Falcon" (1941), also directed by Huston, and other films of Film Noir-style that Huston himself had pioneered (Wikipedia). Near fine with light rubbing to the cover, light bump to top front cover, and faint offset to the endpapers. In a dust jacket which is about an eighth-inch short. We've informed that at least one other copy with a little shorter jacket has been cataloged, so perhaps publisher produced (Graham Gateson reported cataloged by Bauman Books) Also minor edge rubbing and soiling, and a few shallow chips to the spine ends and corners. Cover art still clear and bright.
