Cada vez que alguien, sea estudioso o no, se acerca a su figura, descubre nuevas facetas y dimensiones inesperadas que invitan a seguir profundizando. La ciencia teológica aborda este misterio desde la cristología, cuyo presupuesto decisivo es considerar a este Jesús como Dios en persona, que se ha revelado a los hombres. Dicho con otras palabras, este judío de Galilea es la autocomunicación de Dios mismo. Ahora bien, la cristología no puede conformarse con tematizar a Jesús y su contexto abordándolo solo desde la historia de las religiones, la historia cultural y la historia social. Tiene el deber de preguntar cómo Dios se ha hecho presente en Jesús y, mediante su Espíritu, se sigue haciendo presente sin cesar. La cristología, además, no puede conformarse con aceptar acríticamente la revelación acaecida en el Hijo de Dios encarnado, sino que ha de preguntarse cómo es posible una revelación de Dios en carne humana. Más aún, debe indagar en cómo es posible que su vida histórica forme parte del misterio de su filiación divina. En este sentido, la teología no puede tener solo un interés histórico, ni limitarse a proponerlo como ejemplo moral. Su tarea debe conducir a confesar a Cristo Jesús como único salvador, a celebrarlo en la liturgia y a adorarlo en la Trinidad.
