After receiving a Ph.D., he worked briefly as a rare book dealer and assistant curator at the Gutenberg Museum before moving to the United States. He was the author of several books on bookmaking, including The Life of the Book: How the Book is Written, Published, Printed, Sold and Read (1975). This book on woodcuts was written to address the relative lack of attention paid to this graphic art compared to engravings and etching. Emphasis on Dutch and German artists. Numerous plates in black and white. Quarto. Grey cloth covered boards, with title in gilt to front cover and spine. Slight sun fading to covers. The manuscripts themselves are divided into sections of Early Mediaeval, Gothic (Engladn, Central Europe, France/Netherlands, Italy) and Renaissance. With a brief memorial to Hans Nachod, classical archaeologist and former employee who worked on this catalogue for over a year but never saw its completion. A section of supplementary plates closes the volume. Everything exceedingly well-annotated. Frontis and preface xxii pp., 167 pp. While the hinge is strong and the binding tight, three-quarters of the linen at the rear spine is torn along the joint and the front of joint is showing wear. The bottom of the spine and the two bottom board corners ar worn. The pages are all clean with no sign of foxing.
