Large folio-format hardcover measuring approximately 13.25 x 10.25 inches, xiv, 178 pages. Bound in an attractive two-tone design with black spine and cream cloth-covered boards, the upper board decorated with a racing automobile and checkered-flag motif; silver lettering to spine. Accompanied by the original illustrated pictorial slipcase, reproducing Helck's dramatic early automobile-racing artwork. Written and extensively illustrated by Peter Helck, one of the foremost American artists associated with early automobile and motor-racing subjects. The Checkered Flag chronicles the formative era of competitive motoring, including early American road racing, the Vanderbilt Cup races, international competition, and the remarkable machines and personalities associated with automobile racing from the late nineteenth century through the pre-World War I period. Helck's own account indicates that the project developed over several years before Scribner's agreed to publish the work. The copyright page is dated 1961 and carries the Scribner notation "A-9.61 [ET]." The volume contains numerous illustrations throughout, together with a color frontispiece. Production information credits Joh. Enschedé en Zonen of Haarlem, Holland, for typesetting and printing, Princeton Polychrome Press for the jacket and frontispiece, and J. F. Tapley Co. of Long Island City for the binding. A particularly desirable issue of this classic of automotive literature: signed, numbered, and retaining its original pictorial slipcase. Condition Near Fine book in Very Good+ original slipcase. The book itself presents exceptionally well. Cream cloth boards remain clean and attractive, with the black spine and silver lettering bright and distinct. Binding is firm and sound. Interior pages appear clean, bright, and well preserved, with no writing or markings observed other than Peter Helck's original signature and the handwritten limitation number. Only minor age-related toning and very light evidence of handling are apparent. The original pictorial slipcase is Very Good+, complete and structurally sound, with light age-appropriate rubbing and modest edge/corner wear, including localized wear near the upper extremities. Illustrated panels remain bright and visually impressive. No major splits or structural damage evident from inspection. No dust jacket; the limited Special Edition was issued with the pictorial slipcase.
