No dust jacket. This volume was sponsored by The Landmarks Society of Belvedere and Tiburon. "The idea of collecting oral histories of Tiburon and Belvedere came to Kathy Debs Epstein and me in 1975. We were afraid that the local people's recollections of earlier times would soon be lost by death or failing memories, so we decided to interview some of these people and record their stories. Our first step was to take a course in oral history technique at College of Marin. We further educated ourselves at the Regional Oral History Office at the Bancroft Library, U.C. Berkeley, the California Historical Society and the National Maritime Museum in San Francisco, the Marin County Library and its branches, the Marin County Historical Society, and the Landmarks Society of Belvedere and Tiburon, which made available its large collection of photographs and memorabilia. We collected these histories with a tape recorder, most of them in 1975 and 1976, a few later. As the recordings accumulated, we began to see how much our narrators had in common: memories of the San Francisco earthquake and fire, the 1924 Railroad strike, the Depression, Prohibition, the filling and dredging of the lagoon, the trains and ferry boats, Main Street and Beach Road, the yacht clubs, the arks, the dairies. We came to understand that underlying the very different stories was one story, of two towns growing side by side, the inhabitants of both living in a complex social network. When we began to think how these stories should be arranged in a book, we first thought of a chronological order; that had to be abandoned because each story ranges back and forth through time, and many overlap. We retreated to alphabetical order, with one exception: we placed Grace McCombie Wolfe's narrative first because her family came at the earliest date (the early 1860s) and her story, which is very detailed, gives a rich background for the others which follow.
