Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - North Korea remains a puzzle to Americans. How did this country-one of the most isolated in the world and in the policy cross hairs of every U.S. administration during the past 30 years-progress from zero nuclear weapons in 2001 to a threatening arsenal of perhaps 50 such weapons in 2021.

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. xvii, [1], 256, [2] pages. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Published in cooperation with NATO Scientific Affairs Division. This is volume 31 of the Disarmament Technologies series. The major areas addressed are: Overviews and Perspectives, General Ecological Problems of Nuclear Test Sites, Methods of Plutonium, Americium, and Strontium Determination with Preliminary Radiochemical Separation; Methods of Retrospective Estimation of the Absorbed Dose in Environmental Objects and the Human Body; Modern Methodology and Equipment for Field Radiometry and Spectrometry. Siegfried S. Hecker (born October 2, 1943) is an American metallurgist and nuclear scientist. He served as Director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1986 to 1997 and is now affiliated with Stanford University, where he is research professor emeritus in the Department of Management Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering, and senior fellow emeritus at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. During this time, he was also elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering (1988) for outstanding research on plutonium and the forming of materials, and for leadership in developing energy and weapons systems. It is only with the ending of the Cold War that the issue of environmental hazards at many former nuclear testing sites around the world has attracted international scientific interest. This book discusses the environmental, ecological, and health problems associated with nuclear testing. Topics treated include dose assessment, risk, speciation and transport of radionuclides, measurement and separation of radionuclides, and remedial options. The nuclear test sites examined include the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site (Kazakhstan), the Nevada Test Site (USA), the Pacific atolls, and the Maralinga Test Site (Australia). The volume also discusses the additional release sites of Chelyabinsk (Russia), Chernobyl (Ukraine), Palomares (Spain), Los Alamos (USA), and others. A valuable compendium of radiological problems for a wide spectrum of readers, from non-specialist to expert. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

Among the contributors were Sig Hecker, Vic Reis, Robert Reinovsky, C. Paul Robinson, George H. Miller, Stephen M. Younger, and Thomas O. Hunter Doomed to Cooperate tells the remarkable story of nuclear scientists from two former enemy nations, Russia and the United States, who reached across political, geographic, and cultural divides to confront, together, the new nuclear threats that resulted from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Using the lingua franca of science and technology, the brilliant minds and unparalleled scientific nuclear programs of Russia and the United States embarked upon more than two decades of cooperation to avert the loss of nuclear weapons, nuclear materials, nuclear weapons expertise, and the export of sensitive nuclear technologies during a time of economic and political turmoil in the newly formed Russian Federation a Herculean endeavor known as lab-to-lab cooperation. This two-volume set shares the, as yet, untold story of lab-to-lab cooperation, and for the first time, many Russian nuclear scientists and leaders share their perspectives on this slice of nuclear history. With over 100 Russian and American contributors in papers, vignettes, and interviews, Doomed to Cooperate presents the challenges to cooperation, the trust and true friendships built in collaboration, and the successes of the hundreds of scientists, engineers, and political leaders who came together to make the world a safer place. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing.

Cover has slight wear and soiling. Siegfried S. Hecker (born October 2, 1943) is an American metallurgist and nuclear scientist. He served as Director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1986 to 1997 and was a Los Alamos Senior Fellow until 2005 and is now affiliated with Stanford University, where he is research professor emeritus in the Department of Management Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering, and senior fellow emeritus at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. He has visited North Korea frequently in an unofficial capacity to assess the plutonium program at the Yongbyon Nuclear Scientific Research Center (once every year since 2004). In November 2010, Hecker visited the Yongbyon nuclear facility and reported on its advanced state. In his testimony, Los Alamos National Laboratory Director Hecker concentrated on how the superb technical expertise and facilities at Los Alamos were, and were expected to be used to address pressing national problems for the coming century, while maintaining the vigilance in defense that provided the nation with protection from the unexpected. He reiterated the importance of the Laboratory's statutory defense mission. Dr. Hecker contended that the DOE laboratories represented a significant technological resource for solving large, complex technical problems important to the nation. The laboratories bridged the gap between the basic research orientation of universities and the application/manufacturing focus of industry.

This Los Alamos report is the result of a three year effort by the authors to compile a contemporary treatment of the chemistry of plutonium for publication as Chapter 7 in the third edition of the five volume set, The Chemistry of the Actinide and Transactinide Elements (CATE). As part of this reports the authors have included an abridged discussion of the metallurgy and physicals of plutonium. References to other chapters within this report refer to the larger work of CATE. Siegfried S. Hecker (born October 2, 1943) is an American metallurgist and nuclear scientist. He served as the Director of the Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1986 till 1997. Hecker's achievements have been recognized with the American Nuclear Society's Seaborg Medal and many other awards including the Navy League of the U.S.'s TR & FD Roosevelt Gold Medal for Science Award in 1996. The Secretary of Energy named Hecker, co-recipient of the 2009 Enrico Fermi Award. This Presidential Award is one of the oldest and most prestigious given by the U.S. Government. David L. Clark of the Lost Alamos National Laboratory has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Glenn T. Seaborg Award for Nuclear Chemistry, sponsored by the American Chemical Society Division of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology. Gordon D. Jarvinen was Associate Director of the G.T. Seaborg Institute at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He received the Glenn T. Seaborg Actinide Separations Award in 2008. Dr. Neu came to Los Alamos in 1993 and worked with Dr. David L. Clark.
