Nor couldhe have supposed that a Median empire stood between the Babylonian and the Persian. II. As certainly can we say that the book of Daniel is a work of the second century B.C. III. The fact that a common error is spread throughout the whole book is an argument for its unity. IV. The religious value ofthe book is not weakened but strengthened.The author whose mind and outlook we have found in our study was not a man who transmitted a puzzle which it should baffle the ingenuity of saint and scholar to solve.He was a man who lived in critical days whena great battle of faith was in progress. He was a man who was bringing a divine word of cheer to men, and performing a living service, a man who rendered the richest service to succeeding generations through the service of his own. When, therefore, we read the book of Daniel no longer as a Chart of the Ages,but asthe work of a man who saw the world in the light of what he had seen of God, and whose interest was essentially and wholly religious, we are free to feel its religious power, and to understand its message. To the heroes of the Maccabean days it gave encouragement and hope. And beyond that it enshrined abiding principles which are as valid in our day as in those.' It is merely a collection of specimens, and makes no pretensions to any more advanced standing. The only object has bee to give in plain, easy language, a correct idea of the scope, and as general an idea as possible of the varied sections of the ancient and wonderful book. ***A portion of the introduction is taken from the preface to the Mishna of Maimonides; the chronology is from the "Seder Haddoroth" (Order of Historical Ages), and the sketches of the Rabbis from the Talmud are taken from various hints afforded by the book itself, joined with opinions of the translator. The portion devoted to the Holy Days is from the work entitled "Menorath Hammdore" (The Lamp of the Light), the greater part of which is originally from the Talmud.'
