In den WarenkorbThird Heath Robinson edition. The works of Rabelais illustrated by William Heath Robinson were commissioned by Grant Richards and first published as two large quarto volumes in 1904. Heath Robinson "chose a grotesque style which emphasized the earthiness of the epic while overlooking the bawdy" (ODNB). The resulting book became one of the illustrator's most notable achievements, artistically speaking as well as for the gargantuesque number of illustrations produced. Scarce in the dust jackets. 2 vols, octavo. Monochrome frontispieces with tissue guards and 254 black and white illustrations in the text, including 100 full-page, all by Heath Robinson. Original blue moiré cloth, titles and climbing vine decoration to spines gilt, fleur-de-lys device and twin rules to front boards gilt, top edges gilt. With dust jackets. Small ownership signature to front free endpapers. Extremities a little rubbed, endpapers lightly toned, the occasional spot to contents, cloth bright. An excellent set in lightly rubbed and chipped jackets with tanned spine panels.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, limited edition, number 203 of 250 copies signed by the artist. The Athenaeum included the book as being "books published this week" on 24 October 1914, and it was issued in both a trade and this relatively small signed limited edition. "Perhaps Robinson's best work was done for the 1913 Andersen, for A Midsummer Night's Dream and for two books for children which he wrote as well as illustrated - The Adventures of Uncle Lubin (1902) and Bill the Minder (1912)" (Horne, p. 373). Heath Robinson would later develop his individual style and draw ridiculous contraptions, thereby giving his name as a noun to the English language.- The Athenaeum, 24 October 1914, p. 428; Alan Horne, The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators, 1994. Quarto (292 x 222 mm). Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Robinson. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards, front cover with lettering and decoration in gilt, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. A few surface scratches, occasional light foxing: a very good copy.

The Athenaeum included the book as being "books published this week" on 24 October 1914, and it was issued in both a trade and a remarkably small signed limited edition. The Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art reviewed the volume in December 1914 and stated "the book. is an obvious prize for anyone who desires Shakespeare decorated and defined. Messrs. Constable, in format, printing, and binding, have, as usual, given to their work high quality and care". Alan Horne notes that "perhaps Robinson's best work was done for the 1913 Andersen, for A Midsummer Night's Dream and for two books for children which he wrote as well as illustrated - The Adventures of Uncle Lubin (1902) and Bill the Minder (1912)" (p. 373). In den WarenkorbFirst Heath Robinson edition, signed limited issue, number 66 of 350 copies, signed by the artist. Simon Heneage in the ODNB describes Heath Robinson's illustrations for this volume as "atmospheric". A contemporary review in The Graphic noted that "the new edition of Twelfth Night. has the advantage of the poetic insight and decorative skill which mark Mr. W. Heath Robinson's serious work. This year he shows a considerable advance in freedom and grace upon the book to which we refer. The coloured drawings. are instinct with the decorative spirit of the play". The Graphic, 24 October 1908, p. 492. Quarto. Illustrated title page, colour frontispiece and 39 colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Heath Robinson. Original vellum, spine and front cover lettered and decorated in gilt, grey endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Natural variation to vellum, front cover slightly bowed, minor split at head of front hinge, some light soiling, lacking ribbons: a very good copy.
