Illustrated with a lovely colour frontispiece, fourteen further monochrome plates and numerous further examples in the text. Undated, dated from copies held by the National Library of Scotland and Victoria and Albert Museum Libraries and from the contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1883. A charming selection of Victorian children's stories, including "Havering Hall" by G. E. Sargent, "Fanny's Fancies" and "Union Jack" by Mrs. C. Hall, "The Captive's Daughter" by W. Heard Hillyard, "Prejudice Lost and Love Won" by L. A. Hall, and "Music from the Mountains" by Mrs. Russell Gray. In the publisher's original red cloth binding. Prize copy of Charlestown British Schools, with the matching stamp and presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, dated 1883. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing, general discolouration and a few marks. Internally, generally firmly bound, a little more delicate to "Union Jack" and the last few pages of "Music from the Mountains".
