The volume opens with an introductory essay on Sir Edward Sullivan, the first historian of Irish bookbinding, together with a survey of earlier scholarship by G. D. Hobson, Maurice Craig, Desmond J. Clarke, Thomas P. O'Neill, and William O'Sullivan, including an account of the celebrated 149-volume set of manuscript Journals of the Irish Parliament -- among the finest Irish bindings of the century -- tragically destroyed in the fire at the Four Courts in 1922. Six chapters follow: I. The New Library; II. The Premium Scheme; III. The Printing House; IV. The Leathleys; V. William Hallhead, William McKenzie and Richard Mercier; VI. The Binders and Their Styles -- tracing the stylistic development of Trinity College bindings from the Harleian tradition through the neo-Classical period, with particular attention to the workshops of Leathley ("The College Binder"), Hallhead, McKenzie, and, by extension, George Mullen.
