In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this humorous work by the Shanghai International Settlement's long-standing cartoonist. His skill as a caricaturist evoked comparisons with the Punch cartoonist George Belcher. Here, he skewers nobles, naval officers, minstrels, and pirates alike. H. W. G. Hayter (1862-1915) lived in Shanghai from 1882 until sho…rtly before his death. There, he drew cartoons for two of China's earliest illustrated periodicals, The Rattle and The Eastern Sketch. He held senior positions in the Shanghai Race Club and the Shanghai Country Club and produced memorable drawings of their members. Cordier 3977. Landscape folio. Illustrations throughout. Original illustrated boards, backstrip of paper over linen. Spine somewhat worn, marking and toning to boards: very good.

In den WarenkorbFirst and only edition. Vol. I, nos. 1-12. Numerous illustrations throughout. 4to. Original decorated cloth. Label "Bound by Kelly & Walsh, Ltd., Shanghai." pasted on inside of front cover. Some very minor wear, but overall a close to fine copy. 188pp. Shanghai, Kelly & Walsh, 1896- "The Rattle" was an encore to "Puck", also kno…wn as the "Shanghai Charivari", an illustrated satirical magazine printed in the 1870s, and it closely followed Puck's style and format, offering caricatures, verse, essays, news commentary, gossip, letters, and other short pieces. In the late 1890s, The Rattle stopped publishing for a couple years after having "absolutely drained Shanghai of Humour", before to it revived in November 1900 when the Boxer Rebellion provided new material. Its humour, often at the expense of the Chinese for the benefit of expatriate Westerners, was aimed at the easily amused, those "pleased with a rattle, tickled with a straw", a line from Alexander Pope's "Essay on Man" in 1734. H. W. G. Hayter supervised the Rattle's cartoons. Henry William Goodenough Hayter (1862-1915) was born in London. He later became the editor of "The Eastern Sketch", an illustrated weekly published in the Shanghai's International Settlement during the early twentieth century. During his residence in the Shanghai International Settlement from 1882-1915, he produced numerous humorous cartoons, primarily for two of Shanghai's most important illustrated magazines. Hayter was also the most frequently featured local artist in the North China Daily News. "With communities as with individuals, there are times and seasons when the administration of tonics becomes a necessity" (introduction). Following in the footsteps of the 'Shanghai Punch' (1867) and the 'Puck' (1871) this satirical magazine provides a wealth of historical commentary on one of the most vibrant open ports in China. Full of colonial/ex-patriate humour it is a valuable historical document of the characters and attitudes that were prevalent at the time. Not in Cordier. BM (vol. 1 only); Only 8 copies in OCLC.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, of this scarce pictorial homage to prominent expats in Shanghai at the twilight of the Qing dynasty. It features the drawings of an influential Western artist active during the formative stages of modern Chinese cartooning. WorldCat records just seven institutional copies. H. W. G. Hayter (1862-191…5) was born in London and resided in the Shanghai International Settlement from 1882 until shortly before his death. There, he drew cartoons for two of China's earliest illustrated periodicals, The Rattle and The Eastern Sketch. His skill as a cartoonist led his editor at The Rattle, the journalist John Otway Percy Bland, to compare him to the British Punch cartoonist, George Belcher. Hayter's caricature style and witty captions also recalled the distinctive works of Leslie Ward and Carlo Pellegrini in Vanity Fair. Hayter was a leading light in the heady cultural milieu of the International Settlement, holding senior positions in the famed Shanghai Race Club (established in 1850) and the Shanghai Country Club (c. 1870). While at The Rattle, Hayter contributed many humorous black-and-white caricatures of leading figures from among his acquaintances. Hayter's style favoured close likenesses of his figures, while emphasising the affectations for which they were most well-known in the Settlement's close-knit foreign community. The present work collects together 21 of Hayter's drawings for The Rattle, along with 11 new works, all published for the first time in colour. Alongside a number of cartoons of illustrious members of the Shanghai Race Club, the collection draws on the diverse cast of characters who populated Shanghai's expatriate quarter. H. J. H. Tripp, a stalwart of the Shanghai Golf Club (founded in 1894) and an old China hand, is shown as a slightly weather-beaten patrician in an image captioned "the Guardian of the Links". Hayter likewise pokes fun at C. Beurmann, the German banker and former member of the Settlement's governing council, who is portrayed as rather corpulent and affectionately nicknamed "The Kaiser". The industrialist Alexander McLeod ("Sloppy") appears ready for a weekend's shooting, and Admiral Sir Edward Seymour, "Edward the Great", is the height of military neatness and aloof respectability. There is even room in the collection for a drawing of Hayter's editor, J. O. P. Bland, with copies of The Rattle, The Times, and a budget from the Shanghai Municipal Council completing his middle-class, intellectual persona. This attractive window onto the culture and collegiality of late-imperial colonial Shanghai comes with a bulletin of the Shanghai Club Library loosely inserted. Chou Fang-mei, "The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword: H.W.G. Hayter's Life and Political Cartoons in the Shanghai International Settlement", Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society Hong Kong Branch, vol. 59 (2019), pp. 148-174. Quarto (324 x 260 mm). With 32 tissue-guarded and captioned colour plates. Original illustrated boards, recently rebacked in green morocco with cloth at tips, bevelled edges, recent grey endpapers, edges sprinked red. Boards with repairs to upper edges and some marks, foxing and soiling, contents lightly toned and foxed, plates still bright. A very good copy.
