hardcover. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that e…ncompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

2 ALsS, 4to with integral address leaves; together with 2 ALsS, 8vo with integral blank to one, integral address leaf to the other. 1. 12 November 1829: 'Punch is done and now comes necessity.' Haydon offers Talfourd a 'sleeping head' as security for a loan to pay his taxes: 'I have only till Saturday when Execution will follow.…'. 'Punch, or the May Day' is one of Haydon's better known paintings on which he had been working since summer - and which he mortgaged to his doctor for £100. He had painted Talfourd and his wife in 1827. 2. 30 March 1830: 'Never was an Exhibition which began with such brilliant prosperity - and never was one which failed from the mean and dirty malignity of others. It is doing little.'. Haydon's misery is added to by the failure of a solicitor who held £1000 belonging to his wife for the benefit of his children. 3. 6 September 1845: Recalling his struggles in the cause of High Art: '42 years struggle is hard work', referring to his painting of Solomon finished in 1813. Also complimenting Talfourd on his Vacation Rambles. 4. February 1846: 'I cannot express myself adequately. It is impossible - I have suffered these 3 days torture beyond expression. High Art in England is a Kyber Pass with this difference from the real one, that though there is an entrance in, there is none yet discovered to get out - out of (or) in, I will die hurra-ing depend on that, if I have cleared the way for my Successors.'. At this time, Haydon had borrowed £100 from Talfourd and on the 17th February appointed Talfourd and Darling as his executors. On June 22nd, Haydon committed suicide; after unsuccessfully shooting himself, he then slashed his throat. Benjamin Robert Haydon, 1786-1846, artist specialising in grand historical paintings - a branch of art which he championed all his life but which he felt was never properly recognised and led him into debtors' prison on several occasions. He was firmly in Lamb's circle after Haydon threw a Christmas party in Lisson Grove ('the Immortal Dinner'), 1817, at which Lamb, Keats and Wordsworth were guests. Haydon also introduced Lamb to the London Magazine in 1820. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.

4pp 4to. Benjamin Robert Haydon (senior), gave the same name to his son. He was a printer, stationer and publisher at Plymouth, described as 'prosperous' but prone to the same financial problems which dogged his son, who would have been aged seven at the time of this letter. He is clearly in financial dire straits, 'harassed per…petually by the fear of losing my property by the villains of those I placed confidence in. My losses will be near £2200 - a dead loss for which I shall not receive 2/6d in the pound.', and looking for a 'situation under Government in Public Office of £150-£200 per annum'. Haydon recounts his efforts 'to suppress sedition and prevent the poison of Jacobinism' in Devon. PLEASE NOTE: For customers within the UK this item is subject to VAT at 20%.

1p 4to with integral blank. A rare high-point in Haydon's troubled life following the purchase for 500 guineas of his painting The Mock Election by George IV: 'Today has been a bright day in the annals of my life.'. He opines, 'My future works shall prove I have received an impulse from His Majesty's generosity, which will expir…e only with my life, for when a subject is considered worthy to be rewarded by his Sovereign, his first feeling, after gratitude and exultation, ought to be a resolution to redouble his efforts, that his King may not regret the immortality he has conferred.'. The painting was inspired by a mock election witnessed by Haydon while in debtors' prison in 1827. William Seguier, 1771-1843, was in charge of the royal picture galleries under George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria and the first Keeper of the National Gallery, from 1824. A footnote in Haydon's published Letters indicates that Seguier, after advice, did not show the King this letter. The painting remains in the Royal Collection.
