Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. First Edition. An early third printing of the simultaneous true first edition (the American Bantam first edition was also published on 1 April 1988). The printer's page states: 'Published 1988 by Bantam Press - Reprinted 1988 (twice). Black and white text illustrations and diagrams throughout by Ron Miller. Introduction by Carl Sagan. ***Near fine in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Page block edges clean. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean and bright. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper which is unpriced (possibly an export issue). The dustwrapper is complete, with just minimal edge rubbing. No creases, chips or tears. No fading. Dustwrapper bright. ***242mm x 160mm. 198 pages including glossary and index at the back of the book. ***'Stephen Hawking is one of the world's leading cosmologists and is widely regarded as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein. Although he has been widely published within his highly specialized field, A Brief History of Time is the first work he has written for the non-mathematical layman. In it he explores the outer reaches of our knowledge of astrophysics and the nature of time and the universe. The result is a revelation: a book that not only serves as an introduction to today's most important theories on the cosmos but affords a unique opportunity to experience one of the most imaginative and influential thinkers of our age. ***Confined to a wheelchair for the last twenty years by a motor-neuron disease, Professor Hawking is best known for his work on black holes. But here he turns his mind to the biggest question of all: the search for a unified theory that combines general relativity and quantum mechanics. ***Always in the clearest, most accessible terms Stephen Hawking reviews the great theories of the cosmos, from Galileo and Newton to Einstein and Poincaré, and then moves on into deepest space for the greatest intellectual adventure of all. Could time run backwards? Will a 'no boundary' universe replace the big bang theory? What happens in a universe with eleven dimensions? These are just some of the questions considered with devastating lucidity and brilliance in "A Brief History of Time", a work that is bound to become a classic of its kind.' ***'When the achievements of the physicists of the twentieth century come to be considered objectively, the work of Stephen Hawking will be writ large in the annals of science.' Astronomy. (Quote and review quote taken from the front and the back flaps of the dustwrapper respectively) ***A third printing of the simultaneous true first edition, complete in the original dustwrapper. Early printings of this iconic title are extremely hard to come by now, especially in such nice, bright, collectable condition. The book was rapidly reprinted many times in 1988, the first year of publication. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Ron Miller (illustrator).…

In den WarenkorbAdvance copy of the first edition, first printing. Association copy. Sent on the author's request to his PhD Supervisor, Dr Dennis Sciama, a month before first publication. Original blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine, in dustwrapper. With 26 black and white scientific diagrams, graphs, and small illustrations throughout. With a letter from the publisher to Dr. Dennis W. Sciama loosely laid in. A better than very good copy, the binding square and firm, with a little bumping to the spine tips/ the cloth bright and fresh. The contents, with the ownership inscription of Sciama in black ink on the front free endpaper, are otherwise clean throughout. Complete with the lightly rubbed and creased dustwrapper which remains without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped (£14.95 net to the front flap). The laid in letter on Bantam Press stationary is dated 13th May 1988 and reads "Dear Dr Sciama, / Professor Hawking asked me to send you the enclosed copy of / A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME which we are publishing on 16 June. / Yours sincerely, / [signed in purple ink] Jenny Wilford / Press and PR Manager". The recipient is English physicist Dr. Dennis W. Sciama (1926-1999), who, assigned as PhD supervisor to Stephen Hawking at the University of Cambridge in October 1962, was the first to suggest that he work on astrophysics, though much to Hawking's reluctance. "I didn't agree with many of his ideas, particularly on Mach's principle, the idea that objects owe their inertia to the influence of all the other matter in the universe, but that stimulated me to develop my own picture" (Hawking, 2013). A founding father of modern cosmology, Sciama played a pivotal role in keeping Hawking's academic career alive following his ALS diagnosis in 1963 and continuously encouraged his groundbreaking research into singularities and black holes. In addition to Hawking, he also supervised several other renowned physicists and astrophysicists in their doctoral research, including John D. Barrow, David Deutsch, and former Astronomer Royal Martin Rees. (Professor Stephen W. Hawking: My Brief History, 2013). A significant association copy of Professor Hawking's enormously influential bestseller, the first book to make quantum physics even vaguely accessible to the general reader. From the first edition of just a few thousand, the book has gone on to sell more than 25 million copies in 40 languages. Hawking was one of the greatest science minds in all of history, born on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death, he died on the anniversary of Einstein's birthday, his ashes are interred at Westminster Abbey, next to Sir Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Signed by Carl Sagan on the title page, who wrote the introduction. Additionally signed and inscribed by the illustrator Ron Miller, who has also added a drawing.ÂSaganÂtells the following story: Sagan was in London for a scientific conference in 1974, and between sessions he wandered into a different room, where a larger meeting was taking place. "I realized that I was watching an ancient ceremony: the investiture of new fellows into the Royal Society, one of the most ancient scholarly organizations on the planet. In the front row, a young man in a wheelchair was, very slowly, signing his name in a book that bore on its earliest pages the signature of Isaac Newton. Stephen Hawking was a legend even then." In his introduction, Sagan goes on to add that Hawking is the "worthy successor" to Newton and Paul Dirac, both former Lucasian Professors of Mathematics.
