In the Netherlands, he had already established a strong reputation as a translator of poetry when in 1877 he dedicated himself to the verses of Piet Paaltjens. The 'Sanglots et sourires' were only published four years after De Jagher's death, in 1890.Lit.: on De Jagher: NNBW II, 626.- literature, poetry, translation - De 'Snikken en grimlachjes' zijn de laatste Nederlandse gedichten die De Jagher (Brugge 1814 - Den Haag 1886) heeft vertaald. Hij had in Nederland in de loop der jaren een grote naam opgebouwd als poëzievertaler, toen hij zich in 1877 aan het vertalen van Piet Paaltjens' verzen zette.
