Überarbeitet von Joachim Rehork. Im Herbst des Jahres 1977 entdeckte Professor Manolis Andronikos in Virgina das erste makedonische Grab, das von Plünderern verschont geblieben war. Kunstwerke von überwältigender Kostbarkeit und handwerklicher Vollendung ließen keinen Zweifel daran, daß es sich um ein Königsgrab handelte. Allem Anschein nach war es das Grab Philipp II., des Königs von Makedonien und Feldherrn des allgriechischen Bundes. Diese Entdeckung erregte weltweites Aufsehen und entfachte ein begreifliches Interesse an der außergewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit Philipps II. - denn Philipp war nicht zuletzt Vater und Wegbereiter des bedeutendsten aller Makedonenkönige, ja einer der herausragendsten Gestalten der Antike überhaupt: Alexanders des Großen. Diesem Interesse kommen neun international anerkannte Gelehrte entgegen, jeder ein exzellenter Kenner der griechischen Geschichte im 4. vorchristlichen Jahrhundert. Im Licht neuester wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse schildern sie Philipps bewegtes Leben, entwerfen ein Bild seiner Persönlichkeit und werten seine Leistungen neu.
