Harrap & Co. Ltd in 1940. Most copies of the first impression of the Joan Hassall illustrated first edition were destroyed during the London Blitz in World War Two, making it a scarce book in any condition. Copies with the dustwrapper are very scarce. We have never come across a proof copy before. ***Illustrated with twenty-four black and white wood engravings by Joan Hassall throughout: title-page wood-engraving, four full-page wood-engravings, eight smaller wood-engravings and eleven chapter-tail wood-engravings. All illustrations present, as called for. ***Very good in plain buff thin card covers printed in black. Top corner of most pages very lightly bumped. Bottom of spine and pages slightly bumped. Interior pages bright and clean, although the cheap wartime paper used has lightly tanned. Spine tight without any tears. No tears to the cover. No marks - the covers are nice and clean. No inscriptions. ***In a near fine colour illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, showing original publisher's price of 10/6 net. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed, nicked and creased. Tiny loss to the head of the spine of the dustwrapper. Bottom of spine of dustwrapper slightly creased where the book has been bumped.
