BINDING - Hardcover. Zustand: CONDITION - used/fair. 1st Edition. 210 Pages. Text In Persian.

Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. First edition. A scarce and important early monograph on the maritime history of Persia, issued as volume X of the Royal Asiatic Society Prize Publication Fund (New Series). Hasan (1896-1952), later Professor of History at Aligarh Muslim University, here attempts the first systematic treatment in English of Persian seafaring and commerce by sea, from Achaemenid times through the medieval Islamic period. He devotes particular attention to Persian contacts with India and the Arab world, the importance of the Persian Gulf in the spice and pearl trades, and the role of Persian sailors and shipwrights in the Indian Ocean basin. The work draws on a wide range of classical, Arabic, and Persian sources, including little-used chronicles and geographies. Still valuable for its pioneering scope, it anticipates later maritime historiography of the Gulf and Indian Ocean. London: Methuen & Co., 1928. Printed in Cambridge by W. Lewis at the University Press. Quarto (210 × 268 mm). xiv, 176 pp. Illustrated with two colour-printed plates, including the frontispiece, together with nine monochrome plates. Original publisher's blue cloth, spine gilt-lettered, upper cover stamped in gilt and blind; top edge gilt. A clean, well-produced edition in an attractive binding.…

Signed limited edition, number 17 of 250 copies signed and numbered by the author. The first work on the subject, it traces the rise and fall of Sasanian Persia and the challenges posed to the Arab monopoly of trade with Egypt. In the process, the author corrects scholarly misconceptions that "the Persians were never a maritime people" (preface). The author (1894-1963), a polymath born in Hyderabad, "played an important role in establishing a link between the academic and intellectual circles of Iran and India" (Rahman). As a talented linguist, he draws on Arabic, Persian, and Chinese sources, observing the ways in which Persia's maritime history has been elided from literary sources. Wilson, p. 88. Syed Ziaur Rahman, "Professor Hadi Hasan An Introduction to His Life and Contributions", available online. Quarto. Colour frontispiece after a pictorial manuscript in the British Museum, 10 plates (1 colour). Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover blocked in gilt and blind with central ship vignette in gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed.
