It is intended as a supplement and guide to, but in no sense as a substitute for, the original statements of the popes. This last qualification cannot be too strongly emphasized.The approach used here is essentially document-centered. Only in a very broad sense is any effort made to organize the contents on a topical basis. All the major social pronouncements of the modern popes, from Leo XIII to Pius XII, are here classified according to general subject matter: for example, Rerum novarum is treated under the heading 'economic life,' and Casti connubii under 'family and education.' Each document is outlined and summarized in the writer's own words.The principal social pronouncements of the popes comprise the basic framework of this study. Something more, however, has been attempted. Pope Pius XII has often made significant contributions to Catholic social thought through his radio addresses and his very frequent allocutions and sermons. A number of the major 'non-encyclical' pronouncements of this pontiff are outlined here in the same way as encyclicals. Furthermore, a systematic effort is made to note all significant social statements of Pius XII, whether they appear in a major or in a relatively unimportant pronouncement. Reference is made to all such pertinent materials at appropriate places in the summarized texts.

Hardcovers, 10 volume matched set containing the entire second series of the Young People's Book-shelf, purchased from the original family in the early 1980s. All 10 volumes square bindings and are similar in color. This is pointed out because the phot…os may shows some variations or bowing of the boards, which was only caused by the camera. There are a couple volumes that have a slightly lower condition rating, but this is only because of they have small tears at the bottom of the spine cloth. This issue can be seen on the photo showing all 10 spines. All the books have good interior binding, there are no hinge cracks, no handwriting, no bookplates or any other markings. All of the text pages are clean and without issues. Some of the titles would grade as VG+ only because of the small tear at the bottom of the spine, others grade as a high near fine to fine condition. Overall grade of all 10 volumes has been give a low near fine condition to borderline VG+. All the boards show various degrees of minor corner bumps/wear and some random scuffs and spots on the exterior page edges. Exterior do show a bit of toning and spotting in spots and all the spines show some sunning. There is no publication date listed but this series was published in 1909 (ref: The Publisher's Weekly, No. 1976 - Dec 11, 1909, page 1881) . Cocoa brown pictorial paper wrappers with decoration and lettering printed in black to both front and back wrappers; wrappers are nearly detache…d but are in nice condition for the most part with small triangular losses at the fore edge corners of the front wrapper, light damp staining along the lower portion of front wrapper by spine, and a horizontal closed tear starting at spine edge and going half way across on back wrapper for what is a remarkably well preserved copy of a notoriously fragile book. 48, 7, [1] pp. The book contains an almanac and calendar for 1875, these are followed by several short pieces by various noted writers of the day, including three pieces by Bret Harte; bound following text of the book are eight pages of advertisements; illustrated by Nast, the "Father of the American Cartoon", with ninety black and white illustrations, including a full page frontispiece and an illustrated title-page. Internally the book is in near fine condition with pages that are still bright and supple. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD. Only five copies located on OCLC/WorldCat. EXCEEDINGLY RARE, especially in the original wrappers. Nast, Thomas (illustrator).

Inspiriert wurden Die Tollen Hefte von der Buchreihe "Die Tollen Bücher", die in den 1920er-Jahren vom Elena Gottschalk Verlag herausgegeben wurde. Ausgehend von dieser Reihe entschloss sich Armin Abmeier 1991 eine moderne, literarische Illustrationsserie zu schaffen - Die Tollen Hefte. Bis heute wurden insgesamt 36 der aufwändig gestalteten Hefte in kleiner Auflage veröffentlicht. Renommierte Künstler wie Rotraut Susanne Berner, Axel Scheffler, Volker Pfüller, Anke Feuchtenberger und ATAK illustrierten für die Tollen Hefte in den letzten Jahren Texte von T.C. Boyle, Julio Cortázar, Gertrude Stein, Charles Bukowski u.a. Jedes der Exemplare ist fadengeheftet und mit Ausnahme der Hefte 5 und 7 als mehrfarbige Original-Flachdruckgrafik gedruckt. Zusätzlich ist jedem Heft eine Grafik in Form eines kleinen Plakats beigelegt. Die ersten 15 Tollen Hefte erschienen im Maro Verlag, die folgenden wurden ab 2001 von der Edition Büchergilde (Büchergilde Gutenberg) veröffentlicht. Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahr 1991 wurde die Reihe mit zahlreichen Buch- und Grafikpreisen ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Preis der Stiftung Buchkunst und dem Luchs (Literaturpreis) der Wochenzeitung Die Zeit.
