Mr. Rand once hired a young man named Turner Catledge to be a roving correspondent, to interview farmers and sell subscriptions. Mr. Catledge was to become Washington correspondent and managing editor of The New York Times. Turner Catledge, New York Time wrote of this work: "A most important selection of Southern greats, chosen and dealt with by the admiring heart and able hands of one of their own". Clayton Rand was a small town country editor who drew so much attention with his speeches and his editorials that he was elected president of the National Editorial Association. He attended Harvard Law School, where he helped to pay his expenses by selling peanuts. This experience led him to remark later that anyone who really wanted an education could get one. Mr. Rand visited Philadelphia Miss., as a land prospector in 1918, when he was 27 years old, and bought The Neshoba Democrat, the local paper. Two editorials, "Neshoba's Filth" and "The Town Stinks," spurred a community cleanup. The story of Philadelphia's change is recounted in Mr. Rand's 1940 book, "Ink on My Hands,". The book was one of six of which he was the author or co-author. The others were "Men of Spine in Mississippi," "Spark in the Eyes," "The World Is Mine," "Apollonlus, Philosopher and Financier" and "Sons of the South.". First edition. Stated. Presumed first printing.
