Includes an installment of William Harrison Ainsworth's historical romance Guy Fawkes, here with the Cruikshank plate "Guy Fawkes surprising Viviana Radcliffe in the Oratory at Ordsall Cave," together with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Evening Star," and the index to the seventh volume. Also includes "A Day at Eton," attributed to E. Jesse and contributions by Sam Slick, Charles Mackay, Alfred Crowquill, J. A. Wade, Mrs. Gore, Lady Georgiana Fullerton, Albert Smith, and others. Illustrated with plates by George Cruikshank and others. Guy Fawkes was serialized in Bentley's Miscellany in 1840 before later book publication, with Cruikshank's illustrations forming an important part of its first appearance in periodical form. "The Evening Star" is a short sonnet, later collected in The Belfry of Bruges and Other Poems. It is a love poem built around Venus/Hesperus, the evening star, and the beloved as both "morning and evening star." The Academy of American Poets prints the poem today as part of Longfellow's recognized canon. Contents with an unopened leaf; generally clean with scattered foxing and toning; plates with heavy foxing, as usual. Binding remains sound, with visible stitching and some looseness at edges. Original wrapper worn, soiled, and chipped at extremities, with creasing and edge loss. Complete with all text, pages, and plates. A complete and attractive example of an early 19th century British periodical.
