First Edition. First edition. Rare, presumed unique, tribute book for Charles Sasha Zimmerman (1897 - 1983), published "as an expression of affection and respect for the Council's General Manager" in honor of his 70th birthday. Zimmerman was involved with labor, civil rights, and social welfare organizations throughout his career. He rose through the ranks of his local dressmakers' union in New York to national and international union leadership. He was a trustee of the National Urban League, chairman of the Jewish Labor Committee's National Trade Union Council for Human Rights, and member of New York City's first Human Rights Commission. He helped found the Inter-American Federation of Textile and Garment Workers in 1966 and served as a U.S. representative to its International Federation. He was president of the Jewish Labor Committee and named to the Civil Rights and Social Security committees of the AFL-CIO. Includes a 4-page biography covering his work in the Labor and Social Justice movements and 30 personal tributes from U.S. Government, Labor Union, and Civil Rights leaders including President Lyndon B. Johnson, Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, Governor Nelson Rockefeller, Ambassador at Large Averell Harriman, AFL-CIO President William George Meany, International Ladies Garment Workers Union President Louis Stulberg, National Urban League Executive Director Whitney Young, NAACP Executive Secretary Roy Wilkins, et al. Slender, short 4to plain black leather boards with "Sasha" stamped in gilt on front; 32 pages, unnumbered. Illustrated with frontispiece reproduction photograph of Zimmerman and 34 black-and-white photos of him with various prominent figures on the 8 pages following the text. Very good to near fine with few small touch ups to color on covers and binding material offsets to endpaper edges. Provenance: From the collection of his son, the famed sportswriter Paul "Dr. Z" Zimmerman. A presumed unique and certainly rare artifact demonstrating a period of goodwill between politicians and labor leaders.…
