The development of an atypical Hirnantia Fauna in the late Ordovician of Gondwana was coeval with a slow eustatic fall induced by the abstraction of water into a growing ice sheet. This event is dated as early Hirnantian in age and occurred in tandem with the start of a major mass extinction. A tectonic episode in the Caradoc-Ashgill of North Africa differentiated the continental shelf into highs and lows and may have formed the land required for the accumulation of a permanent snow cover. Depositional lows were filled by regressive shallow-marine deposits in the early Hirnantian. During the mid-Hirnantian, advance and retreat of an ice sheet on the continental shelf resulted in the deposition of glaciomarine sediments above these regressive deposits. The demise of an atypical Hirnantia Fauna is attributed to deglaciation and the associated flooding of the continental shelf by a stratified anoxic water column. This glacioeustatic sea-level rise occurred in the late Hirnantian. 14 pp., 7 figs, 4.

Note to First Edition; Note to Third Impression; Appendix; and List of Illustrations (9 diagrams). Includes Introduction; Weather Conditions; The Influence of Under-Water Attack on the Tactics at Jutland; Preliminary Movements; Battle-Cruiser Action; The Meeting of the Fleets; General Fleet Action; The Night; After Daylight 1st June; Accounts and their Authors; Some Misrepresentations and Misconceptions; The Verdict; and Appendix. John Ernest Troyte Harper (29 May 1874 - 27 May 1949) was a British Vice-Admiral in the Royal Navy. He became captain in 1913. He came to the attention of the public in the aftermath of the Battle of Jutland; after World War I was over, the Admiralty decided to commission an official account of the battle, and Harper was chosen to do this. The Harper Record was commissioned by First Sea Lord Rosslyn Wemyss and was completed during his term of office in 1919. Harper, who was Director of Navigation, was to 'prepare a record, with plans, showing in chronological order what actually occurred in the battle'. The account was to be based solely on the written records available at the Admiralty, without commentary on the merits of what had taken place. An official report had been long expected by the public; questions had been asked in Parliament about when it would be completed. The First Lord, Walter Long advised the House of Commons on 29 October 1919 that the record would be printed once it was ready. It was not finally published until 1927, the matter being raised in the House 22 times during that time. The Battle of Jutland was a naval battle fought between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet, under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet, under Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer, during the First World War. The battle unfolded in extensive maneuvering and three main engagements (the battlecruiser action, the fleet action and the night action), from 31 May to 1 June 1916, off the North Sea coast of Denmark's Jutland Peninsula. It was the largest naval battle and the only full-scale clash of battleships in that war. Jutland was the third fleet action between steel battleships, following the Battle of the Yellow Sea in 1904 and the decisive Battle of Tsushima in 1905, during the Russo-Japanese War. Jutland was the last major battle in world history fought primarily by battleships. After his retirement, Harper published another account of the battle, The truth about Jutland, in his own name. In this he commented about the battlecruiser engagement commanded by Beatty "it is an indisputable fact that, in the first phase of this battle, a British squadron, greatly superior in numbers and gun-power, not only failed to defeat a weaker enemy who made no effort to avoid action, but, in the space of 50 minutes suffered what can only be described as a partial defeat." As explained in the Introduction, Admiral Harper's original work was completed in 1919; it was a Record and not a Report. Since then, all essential facts about the Battle have been made public in the British and German Official Histories. The object with which this book was written was not to controvert these facts, but to show how the public has been misled by their being distorted.
