Broschur / Softcover. 1. Aufl./1st ed. Text in ENGLISH - // The Culture of Violence presents a broad interdisciplinary approach to the subject of violence as it arises in the media, the lives of children and their families, and in the work of artists such as Bruce Nauman, Ida Applebroog, Mel Chin, Kristin Oppenheim, Lucinda Devlin, Gregory Green, Leon Golub, Richard Misrach and Sue Williams. Organized around thematic categories that traverse class and gender, and that range from political to personal expressions of violence, including terrorism and hate crimes, government-sanctioned execution, youth and gang violence, street crime and domestic violence, The Culture of Violence includes a conversation on violence and culture in medieval epics and contemporary media, and a proscriptive essay on coping with family violence. A very fine copy in a jacket just as good. This copy of the 35th anniversary edition of this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is signed both by the author and by the actor whose Oscar-winning performance in the work's screen adaptation has become synonymous in the public eye with the character of Atticus Finch. Harper Lee (1926-2016) drew on her own childhood in Alabama when composing this now-classic story of a young white girl, Scout Finch, watching her father Atticus defend a falsely accused Black man in court; Day praises the novel for capturing the essence of the time and place in which it is set, writing that "this is not a mere 'courtroom' novel but a remarkable evocation of a Deep South community and preteen girlhood." The story was released as a film in 1962, only two years after the book's initial publication, and the movie was an enormous success, led by Peck in the role of Atticus. ANB tells us that the film "solidified Peck's growing reputation as the quintessential player of noble Americans who best represent the virtues of quiet strength, resolve, and tolerance." The present 35th anniversary edition celebrates the novel's longevity and impact, and the two signatures in our copy make a very appealing connection between the novel and the film.
