Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The vast expansion of Indian culture by Buddhists who penetrated through Bactria into the region of modern Kashghar, Yarkand, Khotan, Maralbashi, Kucha and Loulan has been disclosed by the results of expeditions sent out in the first decade of this century. Among the numerous documents was a considerable number written in Ancient Khotan, but in a dialect of the ¿akas, or Indo-Scythians, who from the first century BC to the third century AD were dominant in North-western India. Volume I of Khotanese Texts was published in 1946, Volume II in 1954 and Volume III, which completed the publication of the longer texts in 1956. Volume IV containing the ¿aka Texts from the Hedin Collection appeared in 1961. The fifth volume completed the printing of the texts. When it was published in 1963, it contained a large number of fragments and other pieces published for the first time, as well as the Hoernle Collection, the Samguata-Sutra folios and the Karma Text.

First Edition. Good copy in a contemporary library binding of brick red cloth boards, now slightly dust-dulled, and somewhat stained at the fore-edges. Title and catalogue number gilt-blocked to spine, and now somewhat faded. Minor library marks remain. Internally tight, bright and clean, with surprisingly sharp corners. The texts were first published in Berlin by E. and M. Leumann in the period 1933-6; and since then it has become possible to establish the meaning of almost the whole vocabulary used in the texts. The result is that Iranian scholars have a sound basis for their use of ¿aka linguistic materials. The prolexis is a close commentary on the establishment of the text. It contains all the evidence for the interpretation of words not previously understood. The words are arranged by the Brahmi syllabary and all but those which occur most frequently are given full references. Each word is placed within its linguistic matrix and is subjected to every semantic test before being allotted its final form and sense.

Throughout his career, he advocated for civic beautification, and he became a leader in the conservation movement of the early twentieth century. His wide-ranging achievements made a lasting impact on printing processes, horticulture, and environmental protection. During McFarland's early years, his father operated a nursery and a small weekly newspaper in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. McFarland worked in both of his father's businesses as a youth. These early experiences instilled the passion for horticultural beauty and the business expertise that distinguished him personally and professionally. He eventually purchased his father's press. Combining the skills learned from these early experiences, he established a successful printing company of his own. He founded the J. Horace McFarland Company/Mount Pleasant Press, specializing in seed catalogs and nursery trade publications. Over the course of his lifetime, McFarland wrote and lectured extensively on horticulture, printing methods, and civic improvement. McFarland was a prominent member of the American Rose Society.
