Hardback. 1st thus. Small Quarto Size. Very Good condition in Very Good Dustjacket. DJ protected in our clear archival purpose-made plastic sleeve. A nice copy. Six (6) full page Colour illustrations by the author. Originally published by Little Brown & Co in Boston, USA in 1924. This is the first Australian edition. 144 pages. New Zealand born Gaze [1885-1962] illustrated a number of children's fantasy books in the first quarter of the 20th Century. He lived in Australia, England and America. His work has been increasingly recognised as he created an alternate [to the illustrators of the time] version of fairyland, being influenced by a fashion for grotesquerie but with limpid colours and delightful details which will still enchant children. In this delightful book one can meet an Inklewunk, a talking match, a grumbling picnic basket and a snoring billycan. Robust, professional packaging and tracking provided for all parcels.

First Edition. First edition, with beautiful colour plates by the author. Gaze was one of the most prolific authors of books for children in this period, and this fantasy about the adventures of a small girl in a world where she meets people such as the Clerk of the Weather and the South Wind is one of his most popular works. Coppertop, and its sequelCoppertop Cruises(1920), were marvellous vehicles for Gaze's fine, opalescent-hued watercolours. The plates in these, and his other Australian-published works, 'established him as the most original illustrator of children's books after Ida Rentoul Outhwaite' (Holden,A Golden Age: Visions of Fantasy, p. 82). Born in New Zealand in 1885, a whimsical artist with outstanding talent, Harold Gaze is one of the more elusive Australasian children's writers and illustrators. We know little with exactitude about his life. After being rejected for active service, Gaze reputedly studied at various art schools in London for a period before publishing his first (recorded) book illustrations in New York in 1917: I Wish I Could Fly by Rose Strong Hubbell. At the close of World War I, Gaze moved to Melbourne and launched his career with The Wicked Winkapong in 1918. In 1927, commercial publishing success in the United States led Gaze to settle in Pasadena where he continued his dual career as a munitions expert, either remaining here until his death in 1962 or returning to England in 1959 and settling in Hampstead for his final years, dying in 1963. Solo shows of his fantasy paintings in Los Angeles earned him the appellation of âThe Bubble Man'. It is said that Gaze worked with the Disney studios on Fantasia. Work by Harold Gaze is held in the National Museum of American Illustration, the Pasadena Museum of History, and the San Diego Museum of Art, among others. Octavo, colour frontispiece and six colour plates; in the original boards with oval colour portrait onlay; the unusual dustjacket (cut to show the portrait on the front board). Gift inscription from 1919 with a 1 cm x 6 cm incision to remove the recipient's name, some foxing throughout not affecting plates, all plates clear and bright.

First Edition. The Merry Piper is an exuburant and rambling adventure by Harold Gaze (1885-1962). Born in New Zealand, Gaze came to Melbourne in 1918 and stayed until 1921, producing a vast quantity of high quality work during a short space of time. He published four books in 1919 alone. Many of the plates that adorn his books were probably produced before the Melbourne publishing period, and a few clearly date as far back as 1910. One of the most enigmatic Australasian juvenile illustrators, little is known of his early life or artistic training. Commercial publishing success in the United States eventually led Gaze to settle in Pasadena where he continued his dual career as a munitions expert, truly an odd blend of violence and sensitivity. Gaze is a confident and skilful watercolourist, a master of the opaque application technique that gives his work a feel of magical translucence. The plates and vignettes are reminiscent of the work of Arthur Rackham and Charles Folkard although Gaze's work seems to lack their underlying sinister qualities. Many images are bizarre, but never macabre. First English edition. Small quarto, original decorated cloth (spine rubbed), frontispiece and seven full-page colour plates, numerous line drawings, illustrated endpapers; localised tide-mark affects the top-edge margin of the frontispiece, otherwise this book is in very good order. Contemporary ownership inscription on half-title page.

Quarto, [32] pages with 8 line illustrations plus 3 tipped-in full-page plates (2 in colour); most pages have a green decorative border around the text and illustration. Ribbon-bound slightly overlapping thin card covers (trimmed a little from the original size to tidy up chipped edges, but the edges of the saddle-stapled text are uncut); large colour plate mounted on the front panel (the same image as the first tipped-in plate); covers a little marked, top edge slightly chipped and creased, with minimal conservation to the extremities; ribbon renewed; early gift inscription on the half-title; trifling signs of use; a very good copy (internally excellent). 'The Mite Merry Series'; the list of the three titles in the series (all three are books of children's verse written and illustrated by Gaze) is printed on the second page. Harold Gaze (1885-1962) was born in New Zealand, studied in London, lived and worked in Australia in the late 1910s and the 1920s, before settling in 1927 in the USA, where he is perhaps better known. Zustand: Near fine. First Edition. First edition of this scarce Melbourne-printed fairy book from the New Zealander artist, one of three books in the Mite Merry Series that were "milestones" in Australian children's book production. This story in verse features a gorgeously illustrated koala, fairy and a strange animal with the body of an emu and a camel's head. Except for a short stint at art school in London, Gaze was largely a self-taught artist. Eventually he moved to Pasadena, where he did some work for the Disney Studio. Gaze didn't illustrate a large number of books, but his work is distinctive and wonderful. Robert Holden describes the books in this series: "by Australian standards these titles were milestones in the history of children's book production. Their large quarto format and pleasing typography and layout were indicative of the publisher's understandable enthusiasm and belief that a major new talent had arrived." A great copy of a rare book. 10'' x 7.5''. Original side-stitched blue paper wrappers, color paste-on. Illustrated by Gaze with 3 tipped-in full-page plates (two in color) and 8 pen-and-ink drawings in-text. [32] pages. Faint corner stain on front wrapper, light rubbing to edges, else clean and bright: difficult to find in this condition.
By Gwen Bourne. Drawings by Harold Gaze. London : Cecil Palmer, 1931. Quarto, decorated cloth (lightly rubbed), illustrated endpapers by Harold Gaze, pp. xii; 122, nine colour plates, border illustrations, small stains to a few leaves, a very good copy. A rare children's book filled with Harold Gaze's inventive illustrations. Harold Gaze was born in New Zealand in 1884 and studied at art school in London during the First World War. He then moved to Melbourne where he wrote and illustrated a number of books for children. In 1927, after a brief second sojourn in London, he settled in Pasadena, California. In California Gaze worked with Disney and continued to publish. He remained in America until his death in 1963. Many of the details of Gaze?s life have proven elusive to researchers, but his unique and creative children?s stories and delightful imagery remain sought after by collectors.
Melbourne : Whitcombe & Tombs, 1919. Muir 2698 One of Gaze's most inventive, surreal and creative books, described by historian Juliet O'Conor as 'Anthropomorphism with an extreme fantasy make over' (Bottersnikes and other lost things : A celebration of Australian Illustrated Children's Books, Melbourne 2009, p. 196, illustrated). Harold Gaze was born in New Zealand and studied at art school in London during the First World War, after which he moved to Melbourne where he wrote and illustrated a number of books for children. He later returned to London and settled in Pasadena, California in 1927 where he resided until his death, working with Disney and continuing to publish.
