Born in 1918, Harold Atcherley was in the army throughout the war. He had the misfortune to land in Singapore with the 18th British Infantry Division in January 1942 and became a prisoner of the Japanese shortly afterwards on the surrender of the island to the Japanese. The diary which he kept during his three and a half years in captivity records his experiences in Changi Camp and on the construction of the Burma Thailand Railway. Signed presentation from the author on the front endpaper to distinguished historian and Suffolk writer, Norman Scarfe (1923 - 2014) and his partner, " with love and all good wishes, Harold, November 2004".
